i think i'm kind of the grinch about this one. I'm not trying to be demeaning when I say maybe I would've liked this more if I first saw it as a teen. maybe I just wasn't in the mood for an action spectacle like this and I was getting lost in the weeds with the underneath of it
it really vexes me that i didn't like this movie as much as i'd hoped i would. I can see the things that it's doing, but so much so that it feels like there is nothing for me to really chew on. I'm not the kind of person to act like we don't still need basic feminism (we do, desperately), but it just felt so... trite? it's quite 2010's in that way. I think my big issue in it all is where Max is the character we're behind the most, and so his arc ends up taking a lot of the film's space and yes we overall have an arc where he learns he's being kind of a problem and comes to eventually re-embrace a sort of humanity and he eventually cedes authority to Furiosa, and there's a theme of men and women operating together on equal terms, but the overall perspective of the film through him is one that I was not particularly interested in. I wanted more of the women and the people that they were, but most of them felt like bare footnotes. the thing between Capable and Nux felt particularly bizarre. in general Nux's arc of de-radicalization was just kind of Whatever. maybe i would have liked this more if the makeup and wardrobe departments threw some more dirt and muck on the wives. there are things I did like, so my entire review isn't entirely sour. I liked how Furiosa's grease makeup makes her look like the wastes and its oily blue skies. I liked the cool cars and all of their violent doohickeys. I liked Cheedo's struggling with her wavering faith in freedom. the Bullet Farmer fight was cool as fuck. I think the themes of a world in which people who are pushed to absolute survival by the systems they are placed under and the disillusionment from those systems and trying to find something better is always neat, even if I found them to be a bit surface level. I liked those insane camera speed-ups. in the end most of what I feel going on for the movie is that it looks great, it's a fun monster truck show, but i find the quality of the meat lacking. all the meat's irradiated..

this was good... it's a real 'nervous laugh' kind of short film because of the anxiety-ridden absurdity of it
