This isn't defeatist. This is a belief that there are better ways of handling it and that the way the US is handling the situation does not have the best interests of the Taiwanese people at heart.

All of this becomes a shoving match between two world powers with Taiwan caught in the middle, regardless of the feelings or desires of any Taiwanese people about any aspect of it. The same as proxy wars during the Cold War. The US is putting Taiwan in MORE DANGER in my belief.

If China can't take it for years, that's years that could be spent on a diplomatic approach. But the US involvement makes that literally impossible.

You're not really engaging with any of my points. I think the US involvement escalates things and makes non-violent resolution harder and armed conflict more likely. You treat that as me tacitly endorsing an invasion of Taiwan.

Actually the point was more geographical. It was about how close a place is. Do you think the US would tolerate China arming to the teeth a country similarly adjacent to us?

If Puerto Rico went independent and China started shipping them a bunch of military gear and missiles and shit do you think that the US would just shrug and say "Well, can't do anything about that."

I don't think the US government is capable of seeing Taiwan as anything other than a potential forward military base against China.

I think this is why both Dems and GOP are such staunch supporters of it.

Cuz like it feels absurd to think that the US arming and backing Taiwan somehow de-escalates the situation.

We act like we're trying to protect them but doesn't having another major world power supplying weapons to Taiwan simply increase the pressure on China to take action?
