Another exciting milestone 📢

UCL Research Data Repository has reached over 1 million downloads 🎉

A fantastic achievement - huge congratulations to the staff and research students who have published and shared their research outputs. The repository team are very proud! 👏
A screenshot from the UCL Research Data Repository which has the UCL logo in the centre near the top, under which is written 'Discover research from University College London'. At the bottom of the image, it is written '1,186,758 views' on the left hand side, '1,132,035 downloads' in the centre, and 'more stats' on the right hand side.

I have taken to requesting them in the accessibility box of everything that I go to nowadays. Although I went to an in person thing and found myself wishing I could slap subtitles on the 3D person at the front of the room…

My cartoon for this week’s Books pages in @theguardian.com

Image: A small, pretty English village. A girl with a bag on her shoulder runs towards a van on the other side of the village green. She says to herself "I've got to follow my heart and leave this sleepy village behind. A new life awaits on the open road, touring from town to town in a merry band of brilliant eccentrics!"

A more accurate headline would be "... but find it difficult to get them published". I try to publish every null result that I am sure is robust (e.g., not due to me making a stupid mistake in the method) and it is always harder than with positive results.

Because research with exciting headlines trumps quality research that doesn’t… publication biases are real!

A few months ago, UCL hosted its first ever Replication Games📝

💡Three teams working together to reproduce the results of a published paper in one day - how hard could it be?

A classroom, in which several people are sat around two desks with laptops in front of them. Some are looking at their laptop screen and others are looking at each other, as though they are discussing something.

I have been told that the venue is ‘not too bad’ heat wise by someone in my team that was there yesterday. Have a great time!

Because then nothing unexpected can touch you, at least that’s my theory/logical explanation to myself, especially when there is a window open. And it deters the monster under the bed, obviously.

Couldn’t resist this really weird Kandinsky inspired double serving moka pot when I saw it while ordering my usual coffee beans! Look at it!!

So this past week or so I have been experimenting with body doubling and co-working while working from home. How you say? Using Twitch. It might not be for everyone but it is actually helping me focus and get stuff done. Recommended for my @nlisn.bsky.social friends especially.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Those journal articles, ebooks, bits of data you found? The uni library paid hundreds of thousands, perhaps even millions for all that, depending on size of uni. Then we hooked it all up mostly seamlessly so you didn't notice.

What's common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

No, I do not hand-knit to-order (but if I did, you wouldn't be able to afford it) but I can teach you how to knit that garment (but I expect to be paid).

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Unless you seek it out, most professors don't learn how to teach. It's not part of the job requirements. The idea is that you're an expert in your field and that's Enough.
