I’m from red country. I know these people. I share their blood. But if I tell you what they’re very clearly going to do I’m a “doomer.” It’s another way to dismiss further discussion about very real and very scary possibilities because to acknowledge that then requires making very difficult choices.

I try to be a good ally so my first thought on reading this headline was of a different kind of passing. Which, hey - maybe he is. 🤷‍♀️

Hello, I’m a scientist in a film. My lab is flush with money which I’ve spent on huge panels of colorful blinking lights, several chimpanzees, and an array of absolutely basic microscopes. My whiteboard notes feature carbons with five bonds and several unbalanced chemical equations.
Hello, I'm a historian in a film. I am teaching a college course in American history, and for a lecture midway through the semester I have written the words "Spanish-American War," "New Deal," and "17th Amendment" on the chalkboard, and nothing else.
Hello, I'm a philosophy professor in a film. I am incredibly pompous and use big words in incomprehensible ways. I have absolutely NO sense of humor. I am also so thoroughly clueless that it's a wonder I can tie my shoelaces in the morning.

This is a great story. My introduction to Tom Lehrer came from a friend singing “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park” while we were not poisoning pigeons in the park. I immediately checked out his boxed set from the library. Sad to hear of his passing.
With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.

It’s 2:30 in the morning and the bar has just closed. My car is shit but Paranoid is blasting and we’re all singing. We are young, poor, and bored but we have each other - and #Ozzy. RIP.

I cracked this joke six days ago but the joke is on me because now I’ve had this song in my head for nearly a week now. 😑

I saw The Big Lebowski in the theater on my birthday when it first came out. All I knew going into it was that it was about bowling. Genuinely a perfect movie.

The UK takes a lot of shit - some deserved, some not - but they also get plenty of stuff right. I’m thrilled to now be living in a country that still respects women’s reproductive rights. A bit of good news in these bleak times.
