This obedient plant, Physostegia virginiana, looks like it’s sleeping for the winter…until you notice a smattering of bright pink blossoms and buds on the fall-brown stems. Confusing, but cute! #Maryland #nativeplants

These adoptive siblings love each other

I am considering this a successful baking experiment. It was fun, but time-consuming.

I love when blue mistflower starts going to seed! Native plants have taught me so much about all the different types of beauty in nature and the passing of seasons. #maryland #nativeplants

The beautyberry is beauty-ing! I planted two of these callicarpa americana in my yard 2 years ago. Last fall/winter the berries were very underwhelming as it was still getting accustomed to its new home- I’m glad that this year they’re living up to their name! #maryland #nativeplants

I just adore New England asters, symphyotrichum novae-angliae. I never thought of purple and yellow as a classic fall color combo, but between these, mistflower, and goldenrods I do now. #maryland #nativeplants #bloomscrolling

It’s goldenrod season! #Maryland #nativeplants

Here’s some bottle gentian, gentiana andrewsii, happily growing in the landscape at Pope Farm. Did you know that bumble bees push open the petals in order to pollinate them? I think that’s cute. #Maryland #nativeplants

We got a native volunteer: small white aster, Symphyotrichum racemosum. Pretty! #Maryland #nativeplants

I enjoyed this helianthus giganteu, giant sunflower, growing at Pope Farm near the native plant sale today. #maryland #nativeplants

Pollinators are just loving my New England Aster, Symphyotrichum novae-angliae…as am I! #Maryland #nativeplants

Phytolacca americana, called pokeweed or pokeberry. It’s common enough that I don’t mind pulling it up when it grows somewhere there’s simply not space for it- but so pretty. #maryland #nativeplants

Here’s my late boneset getting ready to blossom about a week ago. By now it’s already in bloom! This eupatorium serotinum is enjoying the clay/loam, part sun conditions at the edge of my yard near the elderberry and great blue lobelia. #Maryland #nativeplants

Skipper of some sort on a blue mistflower, conoclinium coelestinum. #maryland #nativeplants #bloomscrolling

My obedient plant is finally starting to blossom! Physostegia virginiana is an assertive spreader with short long bloom times…and pollinators love mine. #bloomscrolling #Maryland #nativeplants #invertefest

For the #Maryland #nativeplants people, this event happens twice a year and I hope to see you there!

I love DC. This is in front of a fancy office building on a buttoned-up block of K St NW. You know, DC only seems buttoned-up to folks who don’t really know us. Keep your chin up, friends. We got each other. #freeDC

Great blue lobelia, which has the unfortunate Latin name lobelia siphilitica. I’ve had mixed success in my garden- a strong first year for each plant, but not much after that. This one plant, however (not new this year), is extremely large and happy. #maryland #nativeplants #bloomscrolling

Spotted bee balm, monarda punctata. It’s not thriving in my garden but I’m getting a few blooms every year from this fun, weird plant. #maryland #nativeplants #bloomscrolling

Bergamot’s pink-purple blossoms are beautiful, but on my “garden beauty goes beyond blossoms” soapbox here is my case for the post-bloom seedheads of wild bergamot, monarda fistulosa. They are visually striking! #maryland #nativeplants

Black-eyed susan, rudbeckia hirta. State flower of #Maryland and a popular #nativeplant. Grows easily from seed and holds its own against stubborn invasives. #bloomscrolling

Cyperus echinatus, globe flatsedge, is one of the most interesting looking sedges in my opinion (up there with gray’s sedge). Sedges are very important to include in a native garden for habitat ecological benefits- and part of the non-bloom side of garden beauty. #maryland #nativeplants #naturalist

Indian pink, spigelia marilandica, has my state right there in its species name, but the heart of its native range is several states to the south. Regardless, it’s a beautiful addition to my shade garden and seems to be doing well beneath my red maple tree. #maryland #nativeplants #bloomscrolling

I often try to take my photos from angles that exclude human-made objects, but you know what? Native plants belong everywhere, not just in distant fields, and sometimes it’s nice to have a visual reminder of that. Here is some suburban asclepias tuberosa, butterfly milkweed. #maryland #nativeplants
