Book 6 of 2026 💙📚: Pears and Perils by Drew Hayes. I think this is one of his first couple of books. It's silly, but I'm a sucker for his stuff.

The kittens figured out how to share the heated cat bed! They have had it for their entire lives! This is the first time they have ever shared!!

Book 5 of 2026 💙📚: Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein. Despite the cover I picked here, I read the 1961 edition, not the 1991 uncut edition.

Book 4 of 2026 💙📚: The Tiger and the Cosmonaut by Eddy Boudel Tan. More litfic than I generally go in for, but it was nominated for the Giller Prize last year. A bit mystery; a lot of 'coming home' and dealing with family and identity, in this case a queer Chinese-Canadian.

It was pretty out there at Fraser River today.

And here is a baby Hash Brown being the sneepiest, curled up in a soft bed inside a box.

Have a picture of Brûlée from when she was a tiny baby, trying to murder a mouse on a string.

This is our compromise, where I get to have the laptop, but she’s on my lap and mostly immobilizing one of my arms.

Cat tax: a roundup of pictures of Hash Brown sitting in unusual places.
January 6, 2026 at 9:15 PM
I know it’s late, but I thought you could use a picture of a cat sitting in a ridiculous way. There’s nothing under her middle!

First day back, I had to head to work before dawn. (I cry. Well, not actually.)

Yesterday we went into the ocean and today we went to the mountains. New Year’s rituals complete.

Book 3: Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, the Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America's Empire by Jonathan M. Katz. This is for my book club. 💙📚
January 2, 2026 at 5:04 PM
Book 2: Breakneck: China's Quest to Engineer the Future by Dan Wang. I found some of the analysis overly simplistic. His discussion of modern China was interesting, but I wanted more on how they build shit so fast. (I suppose that the answer is 'the power/money of the state'). 📚💙

It’s a kinda purple black green shimmer color.

This started as a hippo, became a cow, and now might be a cat? I’m not very good at faces.

Final update: she remembered about laps.

This cat is 100% waiting for me to get up so she can steal my chair.

I am trying to learn some things about anatomy. It’s hard (for me).

I wonder how the computer chooses what books to put in the 'year in review' image. I am amused at the prominent placement of both "Copagnda" and "Floored: A Woman's Guide to Pelvic Floor Health." Also, of the 14 books in the image, FOUR are by @drewhayesnovels.bsky.social.
