Sims so impressed his Cockatoo Island and Darlinghurst gaolers that he was released after less than two years, in October 1861, on the proviso that he leave the colony post haste, never to return. A ticket was obtained on the Shah Jehan, but troubles kept the ship anchored in Port Jackson for months. Captain Robert Edgar Adams was in court defending himself against charges of murdering a number of his Lascar (Indian) crew. When the case was dismissed, some of the surviving crew went on a bloody revenge, causing further court attention. Soon after the Shah Jehan finally departed in February the second mate committed suicide. In June, Sims disembarked from the doomed vessel in Shanghai. Adams was found dead shortly after and buried at sea. It was reported that Sims had become a master of his own craft on one of China's rivers. I guess we'll never find out about Sims's further adventures, but one senses that there would be good stories there.

Expecting squatters to be British or Irish gentlemen of means prepared to rough it for adventure and future fortune, my interest was piqued when reading in Rob Webster's Bygoo and Beyond (p11) that an American negro named Black Sims took up Conapaira station at the western end of the Mirrool creek area, years before the Civil War released his people from slavery. In early 1857 Lewis Dawson Clarke Sims, born in New York City in 1924, and variously described as a seaman, labourer and barber, was at the Ovens diggings in Victoria. He convinced a cashed up miner named Livens Egleston Reid, that, as the cattle market was booming, ready money could be made by pastoral pursuits in western New South Wales. Within weeks they leased the Conapaira and Scrubby Range runs, totalling 96,000 acres, near current day Rankins Springs. In May 1857 Reid wrote that the pair had gone to Gundaroo to buy cattle, but with the asking price too high they were starting out for New England. Nothing more was ever heard of Reid again. A few weeks after Reid's letter, Sims passed down the Lachlan from Goulburn with bullock teams loaded with goods, such as flour, 'slops', boots and shoes and spirits. Later, in 1863, the prospect of murder was raised, but by then Sims, the person most likely to know about Reid's fate, had also disappeared. In 1859, a man named Scannel, who had resided with but became aggrieved with Sims over the division of spoils, informed nearby squatter Daniel O'Sullivan that the American had been stealing his cattle and horses. O'Sullivan, Scannel and another squatter hastened to Sims's hut, but found only Scannel's wife, her four year old son, and a baby present. Sensing the posse's imminent arrival, Sims had headed south with his mob. The trio followed. However, at the Victorian border Scannel was held on an old charge of horse-stealing. O'Sullivan finally overtook Sims in the Indigo Valley, finding him in possession of a grey horse carrying his brand. In September 1859 at Deniliquin, Sims, alias Black Sims, and a James Keigheran, were brought up on a charge of cattle-stealing. A warrant was also issued for the arrest of a third man James Dike, a hired servant of Sims, who had escaped from police custody. Sims was sentenced to ten years 'on the roads'. Meanwhile, Scannel, who had been tied up in Victoria for six months with legal matters, finally returned to his lonely hut, seventy miles from any settlement. He found that new lessees had settled in. They informed him that with only flour to live on, Scannel's little son had died and the hungry grieving mother had abandoned the dwelling with her infant. Both perished in the bush.

South African has officially suspēnded all American businesses within South African territory and stopped exporting minerals to the United States. 🇿🇦✂🇺🇸 This comes just a few days after Donald Trump cut off all funding from the US to South Africa and the USAID to South Africa 🥶 The South African government catherigorically made it clear to Trump that America is nothing without minerals from Africa and if he thinks Africans are nothing but mere beggars, then he should go look for minerals elsewhere because Africa is tired of the blatant d8srespect and disregard they keep getting from the Western world 🌍💪 The US makes over $25-billion in profits from South Africa annually. This is gonna affect both the American and South African economy very badly 😩 No African country has ever stood up agaînst the United States like this 🙌 South Africa is doing well
