It's more than that. Plate carriers have handles for signalling tactical movement and pulling back wounded squaddies. It's an essential part of 'deconfliction,' the practice of a team moving through contested space with hot weapons. They're not just scared, they're actively prepared to fire.

ya know, it used bug me that my work is owned by a parent company that mostly does military contracting.
but now that we're wholly owned and operated by the joint chiefs' council for civil well-being and economic production, my bennies are real hard to argue with.

Sorry to be pedantic but a mortar is a tube from which a projectile is launched by containing gas pressure generated by burning propellant. There's no functional difference between the weapon and the firework except scale.
