For anyone who thinks change is impossible, here's Jeannette Rankin. In 2 years, she flipped MT from against to for women’s suffrage. Then she ran for Congress - and won in 1916 -despite 1 corporation that controlled MT's economy, politicians, & media.

Anti-suffrage postcard from my collection, copyright 1909 and mailed 1912.
Illustrated postcard depicting a man wearing an apron while washing clothes in a wooden tub. In the floor sits a baby and a brown tabby cat is staring at it. Writing at the top reads “everybody works but mother, she’s a suffragette”. Writing at the bottom reads “I want you to vote but my wife won’t let me.”

It is the birthday of the Nobel laureate who wrote,
“True peace is not merely the absence of war, it is the presence of justice.”
American sociologist and author Jane Addams was born on this day in 1860.

She wanted the world to be better and kinder. So she became an activist, reformer, public administrator, philosopher, and writer. She is considered a founder of social work, a leading voice for women's suffrage, and co-founder of Chicago's Hull House, one of the nation’s most influential settlement houses. It provided extensive social services to poor, largely immigrant families. In 1920, she was also a co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union. Addams was also a prominent figure in securing an eight-hour working day for women, factory inspections for worker safety, and workers’ compensation if injured on the job. Addams’ speeches and books inspired generations of women and men to take action and give voice to their aspirations, aimed at making a better world. A painted portrait of Jane Addams, circa 1906, by George de Forest Brush.
