I’m finding it harder and harder to be here- not a statement about the state of bluesky, rather a statement about the world. What the hell went wrong with everyone??? I’m so sorry 😞. Our children deserve better. It’s so embarrassing for me to try to explain to my kids how we ended up here.

Second that… not done reading it all yet but every piece has been amazingly good! @thomasha.bsky.social is very talented.

I’m reading this now ( upon your recommendation) and I throughly agree. It’s amazingly good. Bluesky has been wonderful for finding good fiction ( also have the third AMOC on preorder). 🙏

☹️ I’m sorry. I guess they are in a hurry. Obtaining visas is very expensive and time consuming speaking from experience. I’ve seen hires that we couldn’t get into the job for 2 years while trying to get approval.

Do you like working on diverse projects with a range of researchers? New hire for a genomics/proteomics ( not structural biology) bioinformatician in the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre at UNSW in sunny Sydney. Position hosted by the Stats Central team.
Bioinformatician (Level A or B)
Join the highly successful Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre and build the capacity of UNSW researchers and research students to process and analyse complex genomic and proteomic datasets.

I am thrilled to release ProteinDJ: a high-performance and modular protein design pipeline. Our open-source workflow incorporates #RFdiffusion, #ProteinMPNN, #FAMPNN, #AlphaFold2 and #Boltz-2. It is a fast, free, and fun way to design proteins (1/5)

So lovely to see this story yesterday on SMC complexes presented by Prof Jan Löwe ( MRC LMB). It’s been a long journey and is still evolving but is a structural biology tour de force. @mrclmb.bsky.social @unswbabs.bsky.social

🚨🧠🔬 A major breakthrough in molecular neuroscience:

I am excited to share a new story from our lab, published in accelerated format today by @nature.com:

"Delta-type glutamate receptors are ligand-gated ion channels"

I always expect more from scientists. I feel they of all people should have the courage to leave X, they shouldn’t stand for it- it’s destroying science (among other things) so why are they there supporting it? Yes I understand ‘seeing’ what is there, everyone needs to know what we are up against.
kmichie.bsky.social
Not sure I have the stomach for that either. It’s not what motivates me. I’m sticking with bluesky. I only do LinkedIn when I feel it is in my employers interest or something really worthwhile is posted. Mostly I lurk. And i don’t go there often.
kmichie.bsky.social
Yes!!! LinkedIn is like primary school kids with certificates. 😳 not the place I want to talk science at all.
kmichie.bsky.social
I will say my husband still uses it… it makes me sad. I still love him regardless so I’m not saying I reject people who use it- just… I wish we were all stronger and could recognise it for what it is. It takes effort for us to change but society won’t change if we don’t action it.
kmichie.bsky.social
I just can’t stomach x… I deleted each post I ever made and left one ‘what you walk past you condone’. It’s insidious how we are so accepting of some atrocities… how quickly everyone forgets for the sake of convenience. I wish people would consciously realise it’s not ok to post there.
kmichie.bsky.social
There are so many platforms now I get lost- worse when someone tells you something you want to follow up- I can never find it again… was it on teams, zoom, email, x, LinkedIn, bluesky, mastodon… no, they called and we spoke? It’s overload.
kmichie.bsky.social
Awesome to know that out there, somewhere… good humans still exist. 🥰

I might try looking for some others. The feed provision means you can tailor what you want. I do spend time trying to block any users that sneak into protein comsos with junk none of us want to see. Yeah- I deleted Facebook a decade ago when I felt it was causing social harm.
kmichie.bsky.social
You know what i don’t understand… it’s free to be nice to others. Why are we evolving a society that is focused on division? What is motivating this ‘trend’? 🙁
kmichie.bsky.social
They are painful to create- you need a ‘feed provider’. I have one (Protein cosmos) that just focuses on structural biology ( experimental, biophysics and computational?. Doesn’t always scrape everything but certainly leaves ‘following’ feed for dead. I follow one on archaea and on virology too.
kmichie.bsky.social
😳😬 careful folks.

Heads up: ignore samtools dot org, similarly minimap2 dot com and likely others. It's owned by a known phishing site and while the binaries they offer look valid currently (but note they may be serving us different binaries to others), that could change.

Ie: it's not us (Samtools team)! Be warned
kmichie.bsky.social
I like bluesky because I just look at a tailored feed on protein science ( still could improve the algorithm to be fair). Filters out cat photos and political comments ( unless I look at following where I can see everything). Not sure if people understand feeds very well on bluesky. 🤔

I struggle to get useful stuff on LinkedIn. Any tips? Maybe I’m not well enough connected to people.

💥 We are *also* organizing Machine Learning for Structural Biology @ EurIPS, Copenhagen!!

Topics include anything in the ML+bio intersection.

Submit your ML+bio short papers! Authors can even present in both locations if they have people in both locations 🚀
workshopmlsb.bsky.social
You asked and we listened... @workshopmlsb.bsky.social is excited to be expanding to Copenhagen, DK at @euripsconf.bsky.social 🎉

Two workshops (San Diego & Copenhagen) will run concurrently to support broader attendance. You can indicate your location preference(s) in the submission portal💫
