I have had some pretty good meals here in San Diego. I am terrible at coordinating eating with other people for that (aside from breakfasts with @zillablitz.bsky.social & @wolfdog.bsky.social), but the food and views have been great. Here‘s today’s lunch.

Last day of SDHistcon is underway. I just completed a fun training scenario of Churchill. I was Stalin. The Axis surrendered at the end, denying me a victory. (The scoring system takes too long to explain here.) Excellent game, my first play with 3 players.

My SDHistcon Sunday opened far too early with a bucket list game—John Company 2nd ed. with a full table of 6 players. 1710 scenario. The Company failed at the last minute due to a blackmail card tanking a vital trade. Excellent, excellent game, @colewehrle.bsky.social!

Finished SDHistcon for tonight with a couple quick hands of Fellowship Of The Ring: The Trick-Taking Game, cooperatively with @andrewbucholtz.bsky.social and one other. Nice cozy way to end the day’s gaming.
What’s this in my hand of cards? A shiny gold ring? It whispers to me in the silence, in the dark words of the Land of Mordor: one game to rule them all, one game to find them…one game to trick them all and in the dorkness bind them!

Started SDHistcon today with another @fortcircle.bsky.social upcing title, First Monday In October. Brain-burnery historical action, very interesting with lots of ways to influence the Supreme Court.
Main gameboard showing cards for all the justices, tracks for judicial philosophies, and a first-player gavel portrayed by a tin of Altoids. Justice Roger Taney, infamous in history. I tried to force him to retire, but rolled a 3 instead of a 2…he lasted for a long long time. The one case I won: New York vs Lemmon. My clerk argued successfully in favor of the state’s ability to free enslaved people who were transported through the state.

My first game of SDHistcon is in the books. My flying reptiles finished in 3rd place behind Kai’s cephalopods and first-time player Gene’s mighty fish.

Oh, right, aside from Pixies, here are my new acquisitions from the Pacificon dealers room! Longstreet Attacks and Thunder In the Ozarks, both part of the excellent Blind Swords series published by Revolution Games.
The games, still in shrink wrap, sitting side by side. The boxes are mostly black, with with sans serif type. Colorful historical paintings are featured within thin frames on the box covers.

Sunday at Pacificon, filled with shorter games: Race for the Galaxy (with Alien Artifacts), Pixies (new to us, and fun), and finally Forest Shuffle. Headed home today.
Race For The Galaxy. My tableau has 8 cards, with 3 face-down cards tucked underneath. The face-down cards are goods I will later consume for (not enough) victory points. Pixies, a simple grid card game with quirky, colorful photographs of handcrafted pixies on each card. Forest Shuffle. My forest has a lot of horse chestnuts.

Friday at Pacificon worth @dwnie.bsky.social was great! 1848 Australia got off our Shelf Of Shame. Then we taught Forest Shuffle (not pictured) to some dear friends, and to end it all, we ended it all with Nuclear War. (A Pacificon tradition going back several decades.)
1848 Australia. Federal Territory Railway in my area with a 5+ and 4+ train, and £50 in its treasury. I also had shares of three other companies. The board is viewed from the right. The game is in the “brown” phase, so called, I think, because one of the major companies is about to turn to crap. Nuclear War card game, with the fancy playmat from the last Kickstarter. I have the Supervirus. This is not ideal, but the illustration is hilarious.

The last 2 months brought us a handful of new games. Today we broke out two. First, @bbornmueller.bsky.social's smash hit Fellowship of the Rings trick-taker. Fun & gorgeous.

Second, by @dwnie.bsky.social's popular demand, Kelp! Her shark got too tired to win (really, that's a thing in the rules).
Fellowship of the Rings Trick-Taking Game. Chapter 1. Bilbo is smoking something while winning a trick with forest cards. However, Frodo got to play a Rings card, which means anyone can open the Rings suit for the rest of the round. This is important, because Frodo needs to win almost all the Rings cards. The rules say so! Kelp is a gorgeous game. The board depicts a green sea bed with kelp and rocks. The shark is a well-sculpted, large miniature, very dynamic. Facing me, as the octopus, are bakelite tiles. Like a block wargame, they hide the information from the shark. Important information such as where I am. I don't want the shark to eat me. I want to eat food, and set traps for the shark.

I made it out to Kublacon for the afternoon! Played Roll For The Galaxy & Tank Duel (forgot to take photos) with @andrewbucholtz.bsky.social. Tank Duel was new to me, very fun and cinematic.

Then I tried Forest Shuffle with @atomiktikikatz.bsky.social & friends. New to all, I loved every moment!
Roll For The Galaxy by Tom Lehmann. It is early in the game. Each player has 5-6 world/development tiles in front of them. Lots of little dice of various color. Forest Shuffle. Lots of pretty cards, many of which are trees.
