My SDHistcon Sunday opened far too early with a bucket list game—John Company 2nd ed. with a full table of 6 players. 1710 scenario. The Company failed at the last minute due to a blackmail card tanking a vital trade. Excellent, excellent game, @colewehrle.bsky.social!

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

Then I saw @candidrum.bsky.social setting up A Very Civil Whist. She was kind enough to let me kibitz and learn through osmosis. I kickstarted it based solely on the card art, but @fredserval.bsky.social has done a remarkable job of twisting trick-taking into a compelling 2-player historical game!

My second game was @fortcircle.bsky.social demoing their upcoming trick-taker/action selection game, Shakespeare’s First Folio, which @beyondsolitaire.bsky.social joined. Fun lighter game, great art, plays in 30-40 minutes, and a theme perfect for English majors such as yours truly. Recommended!

Everyone from TSA at the airport today, as I travel to San Diego for SDHistcon, has been pleasant, efficient and professional. No way I would be any of those if I were working in a shutdown.
