I feel like we can learn things both from the media mix manga does to turn a profit and from the French method—I don't think the US market can ever truly be either, but I want to believe we can take lessons from both to make change in a sustainable way that acknowledges the quirks of our industry.

I know a Canadian author who received a five figure grant on top of their advance to make their debut graphic novel—it's not just awareness, but also financial feasibility as a whole is a way different conversation in countries that invest more in culture.

ComicsPro is also a great industry show to better understand the retailer side of things! I'm hoping to do more industry specific conferences in the coming years for sure.

I want to know more about the nuts and bolts too—I wish there were more books written about the US comics industry that deal with the nuts and bolts of it, but MANGA IN AMERICA does a really good job of balancing the nuts and bolts with the cultural history for the manga industry.

Yes! Those same book distributors are also responsible for distributing GNs to bookstores. So it's kind of interesting to see how those two different comic markets have adapted to the book market—and I think GNs suffer in the book market because the book market has yet to fully understand the medium
