Phillies only have 32 players on 40-man. More likely to be interested in Rule 5 this year, even if they sign the 3 FAs.
They pick 29th. But 8 teams currently have full 40 man rosters. 3 more teams w 39 guys. So if those teams all pass, Phillies essentially pick 18th. Still not great.

They need young guys, but Phillies system doesn’t seem to draft and develop great players these days.
So it feels like 2026 could be a reset year, rolling dice on young guys.

At least 50% of the trade ideas written up are absolutely stupid. But this seems viable. Garcia for Castellanos swap. Each has slumped recently and gets a change of scenery and a chance to recover old form. Casty more durable, also more expensive.

@timkellysports.bsky.social It would be interesting to hear if there are other teams with veteran change-of-scenery candidates that might be a partner for a Castellanos trade that could be a better option than straight release. Maybe an off-season column idea?

They aren’t trading Harper, Turner. Schwarbs unlikely to repeat 2025, but still be VG. Hopefully Turner is similar & Harper regains form. This team can get to playoffs even if JT, Ranger & Bader leave. But they need clutch postseason guys like Ranger. They also need a scary RH bat.

The reason I think Phillies need turnover has more to do with mental state. These guys, now, must feel the pressure and the season/game becomes a slog. It’s not an accident they loosened up when Otto first came, when Bader came, and when they got Wheeler news. It gives them perspective.

Were there REALLY any surprises in that press conference? Really? No. Interesting to hear them confirm stuff, but lets get perspective. They went to playoffs for 4 years straight, after a long drought. We are pissed because of our expectations.
