The big lake currently has a Common Loon and two Tundra Swans. I was lucky that the swans stayed put as I walked to the spot on the other side of the lake #birding

Listening to the tape of my youth: an unknown* pianist playing Liszt's Rhapsodie Espagnole. On the other side, a few of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes, also unknown artist**

* I didn't know enough to note the artist back then!
** There may still be a record somewhere?

@glennklockwood this is how it looks in Tusky. Maybe I need a different app

The Tundra Swans were a ruckus bunch. Twice Merlin Sound ID thought it was hearing Sandhill Crane, which would require comments around here (yes I looked up...the only birds flying high were American Black Ducks) #birding

Haha I got there at sunrise with my big scope to look at ducks, Tundra Swan, and whatever else might show up. I was there so long that a pair of adult Bald Eagle nearby just chilled #birding

LOL "scope in the car" Dude you drove all the way to the bottom of the bay with your scope and didn't lug it on the 0.7 mile paved trail to the viewing area??? #birding

Today we had a bird walk in the rain. I volunteered to carry my scope in case we had ducks. The Plant Guy asked me to scope the Potomac because there was "something interesting". I looked and found a male Common Goldeneye. We hollered for the rest of the […]

There was a female Rusty Blackbird in the marsh. She was busy clearing leaves off her house, so it seemed. #birding

The Creeper God smiled at me today. They were everywhere. I put down 3 on my list, not wanting to get flagged. One guy had 13 on his list today. Taking photos of them, though, still required skills #birding

They were the lucky couple who happened to be at the lake on the day ZZ Top and the Guru spotted the two Black Scoter. The scoters were gone by the end of the day. "Gotta watch out for the Ruddy Ducks. We thought they were Ruddy Ducks at first, but they were […]

I was at the big lake when two birders ran into me. I had to show them the faraway picture of two "Redhead"...they weren't sure either. The man said, "you know when you are on this side of the lake the ducks are on the other side, and when you get there they […]

Also, Rusty Blackbirds are back. Winter is coming. #birding

It was a fine day for the bird club's bird walk! Ducks have been moving in for the winter, and there were many Red-headed Woodpeckers. The co-lead of the walk is a botanist and he explained this is a good year for the kind of acorns that fit in Red-headed Woodpecker's mouth. #birding

Area Lake gets weird ducks, although not the Black Scoter that showed up in the bigger lake south of us two days ago. Today it's the Ring-necked Duck, which IMHO really ought to be called Ring-billed Duck. #birding

Everything sort of came together for me today when I spotted a pair of Purple Finch. Seeing them was the validation I needed now #birding

One of the birds I always miss is the Brown-headed Cowbird. Well, not today. I looked up and there were 4 of them. They look nothing like when they are breeding, but the bill shape was a big giveaway. #birding

I was looking for American Pipit, Orange-crowned Warbler, Peregrine Falcon, and Pine Siskin at Ticksville. Alas it was too windy. American Pipit came up on Merlin but I never saw it. Afterwards went to the pond up the street from Ticksville. By then it was […]

LOL Fairfax local news today @ffxnow #uspol

Had a late start this morning, but there were some good birds. Found a few young White-crowned Sparrows mixed with the locals, and a very hungry Chipping Sparrow that kept on eating when all the locals flew off. #birding

Continued my quest to check out all the hot spots in my CBC Sector. Today's spot was another artificial lake, reminiscent of many other artificial lakes in our region. This lake turned out to be bigger than it looked: took me more than 3 hours to get around […]

The highlight for me and a bunch of folks that were behind was the sighting of three very excited Golden-crowned Kinglets low in the bushes. One of them flashed an orange crown, the other two yellow. I attempted a few pictures even though I knew I'd be defeated by sticks. #birding

We were at the beach when one young member saw a Dunlin flying over, the only shorebird other than the 4 very chill Killdeer. The Dunlin turned out to be chill too, napping on a rock while keeping an eye on all of us. I still need to learn to recognize […]

My deck is now a pile of sticks. The guys aren't coming back until next Monday, definitely with the dumpster but hopefully the building permit. Gravy the Cat wants to go out, but there's no porch now.

The Hunt for Vesper Sparrow is over! I got to Ticksville at sunrise. As I walked the morning fog dissipated and sparrows and finches came out to eat and play. At the sparrow perch near the pile of rocks, there it was, just one, with its eye rings. It was […]

Today's club bird walk is at one of those ubiquitous civil war battlefields around here. This one has sparrows! I missed the Vesper Sparrow that made a quick appearance for the people in the front, but then we found a weird sparrow that had a big white […]
