Hey folks, I've got a new report out about how declining enrollment (often driven by intentional policies) is making life harder across North Carolina's schools. Please give it a read and let me know what you think:

LOL, just seeing that they didn't even wait until the ink was dry to do it (via the Assembly's "The Caucus" newsletter)

Others criticized the governor for waiting until the last possible day to act. NCGOP Chairman Jason Simmons said: “Republican legislators acted immediately while Governor Stein chose to belatedly act on a Friday afternoon.”

The NCGOP further claimed the “tools available in Iryna's Law were unable to be used within the justice system” while Stein waited to sign the bill. (Fact-check: The bill doesn’t take effect until December 1.)

Republican tax cuts for corporations and wealthy North Carolinians are being paid off the backs of children and their families. This is the explicit trade-off NCGA leaders have made. I wish the press would do a better job of explaining it to their readers.

Half-baked idea to limit grappling on corner kicks: If the ref sees you grappling/wrestling another player pre-kick, you have to go stand on the other side of the midfield line until the corner kick is taken. The lectures aren't working.

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

Graph of the heterogeneity of earnings volatility for salaried and hourly workers measured as a change from the previous month.

Over the past decade, cities and states in the US have enacted ‘fair workweek’ laws to stabilise worker schedules. This column uses administrative data on US workers’ paycheques and firms’ payrolls to document considerable monthly fluctuations in earnings. Pay instability is widespread, disproportionately hits lower‑paid hourly workers, and is largely driven by firms’ labour demand rather than worker-related determinants such as childcare demands. These fluctuations represent genuine, welfare-relevant risk that materially shapes household decisions and has attendant effects on the economy.
