E and I were in an unfamiliar neigborhood ~3 years ago and watched an urban fox trotting down a residential street take a detour to make a deposit in the very middle of someone's driveway and then resume. Like an intentional "F you specifically", made us wonder what they'd done to offend the fox! 😂

I suppose that was the compromise in that kid's family, I admire it. In ours, I stuffed a balaklava and gloves into my middle schooler's backpack. My high schooler deigns to wear his sports team jacket over his hoodie; it's nowhere near as warm as his winter coat but at least it's another layer.

And once I found a local scrap metal yard who would take the lights, I called back our local recycling facility (who told me to trash them) so maybe they can pass the information on to anyone else who calls.

Empathy.

My trouble is that I HATE throwing things in landfills, but finding the right homes takes so much longer. I probably spent over 2 hours on the string lights. 🤦🏻‍♀️ But, now they are not leeching copper and lead into the soil somewhere so at least there's that.

You inspired me! So far this year I've recycled the metal from a box spring and 2+ years' worth of broken holiday string lights, and given away 6 pairs of outgrown kids' boots (and a pair of shoes) in my local Buy Nothing group.
