Agree – I think he always starts from an assumption that the past was better and doesn’t even realize he applies that framing.

Lazy is exactly right. And incurious. Maybe take a look at what *is* there and dig into it or ask why what you expected to see isn’t there? Not to mention the novel itself is only a couple centuries old, and lit fic and bestseller lists are half as old as that. Culture changes.
