Dogs have one advantage over cats as an editorial assistant and as a #StetPet: they can go outside for walkies! 😉

Today we check in with Effie, #StetPet editorial assistant of Halifax editor @choicewordsedit.bsky.social, who attended the virtual #EdsGuild2025 Red Pencil Conference.

"Conferences are wonderful but they can also be a lot, so I’m grateful to Effie for reminding me to take breaks when I need them!"

We're late sharing @ivacheung.com's November cartoon, but not because we were busy refining this post a thousand time before submitting it. Enjoy a laugh.

(And be sure to check out Iva's aside about her timely leftovers cookbook.)

My cat Roo is honored to be this week’s #StetPet 🙏🏻!

The hashtag “StetPet” is a great hashtag for #writingcommunity building created by @edsguild.bsky.social.

“Stet” in Latin “Let it stand.” ie keep it as written.
Meet Roo, #StetPet editorial assistant of Seattle-area author and #EdsGuild Red Pencil attendee @matthewrehrl.bsky.social.

"I was looking forward to the #EdsGuild2025 Red Pencil Conference at the Lynnwood Event Center, but—sadly—my #StetPet Roo isn’t quite as fond of red pencils! 😉"

If I took away anything from the #RedPencilConference this past weekend, it was this gem of a reminder from Laura Burge. Finding a working style that works for you can take some time, but once you do, don’t let anybody tell you it’s weird or wrong or inefficient. 🩷

Have a great week!

The Red Pencil Conference owes me nothing. I gave a well-received talk on some of the best practices from my book, The Copy Editor’s (Life)Style Guide. It was wonderful catching up with old editor friends and getting to know new ones in Lynnwood as a presenter. #EdsGuild2025 #RedPencil2025

Currently decompressing after the awesome @edsguild.bsky.social Red Pencil conference. I realized that there was a through line for me from the keynote and all the sessions I attended: editors need to lean in to their humanity and come from a place of compassion and empathy.

Such a great keynote address on AI and editing by @janefriedman.com at today's @edsguild.bsky.social Red Pencils conference.

One key takeaway: How we approach the issue is as important as the issue itself.

Keynote on 'Editing in the Age of AI' at the Red Pencil Conference by @janefriedman.com who reminds us of 'Amara's Law (or the Law of Humility): we tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run'. #EdsGuild2025
