Every August, people around the world honor the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I’m sharing a paper crane to represent my hope for a world free of nuclear weapons. #CranesForOurFuture

Bonus from moving my email inbox from 500+ to <15: I found a MasterCard gift card that I forgot existed during the tsunami of academic year messages. Woo hoo! First of the two books I purchased was interesting, a novel by a South Korean author with a recent English translation.

I learned through FABBS that NC Senator Thom Tillis is co-leading an effort to fund NIH for FY 2026. We need to fund NIH research for benefits to public health, biomedical innovation, education of the next generation of researchers, and the economy. Thank you Senator Tillis!

Those data will be useful even if not for the grant mechanism you intended. Let spite fuel you to keep moving forward, and let’s set up a time to talk.

“It’s extremely alarming that grants that have been vetted by the scientific community and deemed important and impactful to understand the world are now being cancelled because of political ideology,” says @lkfazio.bsky.social.

“This is direct censorship of scientific research.”
Exclusive: NIH to terminate hundreds of active research grants
Studies that touch on LGBT+ health, gender identity and DEI in the biomedical workforce could be terminated, according to documents obtained by Nature.

People are weird. When looking at a photo a second time, they rate it as closer even though it is identical to what they saw first. This is called boundary extension & our team found it happens in East Asian samples, as it does in Western samples. Open access: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Ha! I remember having to drive the leg through Chicago (I had a van license). There was a “Just Say No” parade so getting to the Palmer Hotel was complicated. Have the girl who grew up in a town of less than 1k people drive in Chicago, they said. It will be fun, they said. 🤣

Just muted the “announcers” and my enjoyment of this basketball game has noticeably increased. Highly recommend.

1-Rest & exercise. 2-I read many books on my last sabbatical. Each book has one PowerPoint slide that includes a photo of the book cover with quotes & notes. I inserted topic/“chapter” heading slides to make it easier to locate ideas as I pull that work into class prep or writing. Good luck w/ book!
