Every major non-IP film that’re on this year’s Best Of lists had theatrical runs. Each one received middling support, save Sinners & maybe The Long Walk.
The public just doesn’t widely support unknown/“unsafe” bets for their cinema dollars anymore.
The only way to draw them back in?
Address cost.

Problem is that people are generally only going to see global homogenized IP and kids movies, if they go at all.
The better conversation to have is about costs to go to the theater and how to make it more attractive than home.

If your ideas are great (there isn’t a single mentalist working today that hasn’t had some form of his work in their arsenals) folks will bury every body you’ve got.
This is why I don’t “hang” with most magicians. Scratch & reveal either a creep, a fascist, or both.
