I'm not a Marxist, but I find Marx to be an extremely useful place to start when you want to learn why capitalism is harmful. My own flavor of leftism tends toward anarcho-communism, or "libertarian socialism," if you like.

Capitalism is a system of domination and hierarchy. It is at odds with any form of egalitarianism. Therefore, a capitalist economic system cannot be the basis for a free society.

Here in the US, we use the words "liberal" and "conservative" to distinguish stances on social issues. However, both the republican and the democratic party are liberal, in the original sense of the word. Both uphold capitalism. Democrats are just nicer about it, on the surface.

I can't imagine what it's like to put yourself out there, and have so many people scrutinize your appearance. I don't envy that! I hope there were way more positive affirmations than negative assholery!
