id's main reason to go RT mandatory is that all platforms they were going to ship on are RT capable and it saved a boatload of time because they could use WYSIWYG to iterate faster, which according to their engine lead shaved years off the dev time.

It's something Alex Battaglia from Digital Foundry said in his engine deep dive where he talked to the engineers at Ubisoft. They've lowered the quality of the baked lighting to reach that 9GB. If you want similar quality to RT you will end up with 100's of GB more.
