Starmer can sleep well. His American friends will make sure Farage will take over and Labour will not get into power in our lifetime. So taking no risks is a good preparation for the British Vichy government. His personal safety will be guaranteed.

Start dumping U.S. treasuries on Monday and crash the markets. Accelerate the inevitable.

It seems that an indictment in the U.S. under whatever pretext gives the right to the U.S. to kidnap any foreign citizen from a foreign country. This is, effectively, the start of the end of the rules based order. They want 3 dictatorship centres surrounded by soviet satellites.
January 3, 2026 at 4:25 PM
Can’t wait to see a reaction from the government. It is contrary to British interests unless we have already succumbed to soviet style American satellite status.

very, very, very happy for Krasznahorkai! so deserved

What Starmer has just announced with Trump is horrendous. The United Kingdom will effectively cease to exist as a sovereign state in the long run. The funny thing is that Labour will be wiped out by a U.S. supported Reform anyway, so well done.

Self-censorship, self-preservation, many little moral compromises on a daily basis, samizdat, looking out for tiny islands of freedom, end of laughter. All this is coming near you. This site may be shut down at some point.

The Starmer government is doing everything in its power to lead us toward a Reform government. It is rudderless, always on the back foot, bad policy reactions, policies do not attempt to solve any of the structural issues we have been facing. There is an enormous shortage of capable leadership.

Trump appears to have had a health crisis. Will he die before America fully converts into an authoritarian regime. They clearly need him to complete it. Obviously, he also has to look strong while doing it. So a speech debilitating stroke could be a significant hurdle, too.

People should not expect any major pushback from the markets, definitely not in the short term. It's not rational to think that the markets will react to the expectation of the long term deterioration of economic conditions. Those will be heavily discounted into the present.
The 10-yr yield is now flat/down. There will not be a dislocation in the treasury market because of this. At least until there is a Supreme Court decision and even then if there is a spike in yields, it will be temporary.

This is a somewhat misinformed post. The effective tariff rate is high but not that high given there are many exemptions. The tariffs affect the lower middle class disproportionately but consumption has been driven by higher income consumers and that softens the blow to the economy, for now.
I'm totally baffled abt the markets. Where is Capital? Trump is messing w/ govt data; imposing tariffs; flirting w/ default; meddling in corporate management.

Where are the CEO complaints? The bond vigilantes? Where are billionaire hedge funders who trade on good data? Was Capital's power a mirage?
"Antoni is the chief economist at the Heritage Foundation. He has been a relentless booster of Trump’s policies on social media. And he has demonstrated time and again that he does not understand economic statistics." With embarrassing examples from trade, employment, LFP, UI.... [Dominic Pino, NRO]

Independence of the Fed is an abstract concept the significance of which doesn’t resonate with the median voter. This is very important for the deconstruction of other institutions and the reason why the steady march toward authoritarianism is without any major resistance.
August 26, 2025 at 6:54 AM
There will not be a Democratic President in the foreseeable future. For that, you might have to fight for but I don't see Americans fighting for abstrat concepts such as rule of law, democracy, etc....

Absolutely. Although I expect more of a fight to stop the march toward authoritarian rule, once they win the election. In any case, the Starmer government reaction to the far right, policy-wise, is a total disaster.
Anyone who doesn't think Britain is following the USA into the depths of hell isn't paying attention. The US flag was one of the first symbols co-opted by the far right in America, and now it's happening in the UK. Farage's Reform Party is British MAGA.

A clear case of American nihilism as they are marching steadily toward authoritarian rule. It’s somewhat painful having seen this unfold on more than one occasion. Very interesting how average Joe’s reactions are so similar independent of any other factors.
I’m conflicted. I condemn the retributive use of LE against a citizen. That said, John Bolton made a career out of common cause with face-eating leopards and now he is getting his face eaten.

Karma. Zero sympathy for Bolton

One wonders whether the incessant pummelling of lower income families has a social policy aspect. Some kind medieval economic subjugation of low income families.
Trump says he intends to tariff furniture

The slow but steady march of the United States toward authoritarian rule and the destruction of institutions and the rule of law is fascinating to watch. As a non-American the silence and the nihilistic resignation and acceptance by Americans is not surprising, I was expecting it.

Our dear European leaders (EU and my non-EU UK and other non-EU) must be very busy scenario planning for 2026 and more importantly 2028 (just kidding, they are not scenario planning for the next month let alone for 2028).

So what if 2028 comes and DJT stays in power as a result of some “emergency”

It’s always astonishing to read that the chief conman is misjudging the other party or being conned. He conned himself to presidency for god’s sake. Maybe his motives are elsewhere.
But that's what makes it extremely alarming.

Trump seems to believe that Putin really does respect and fear him, so a US financial stake in Ukraine will be enough to get him to end the war and split the spoils.

But the whole purpose of the war is to prevent a US/EU financial stake in Ukraine.

If I were Starmer, I would set up a £100 billion science fund, would substantially increase defence R&D and spending, boost spending on science education, would set up a science council with European partners and would create incentives for European companies to fund a science grant fund etc etc
🧪
If I were Canadian PM I would immediately:

1. Create a new $15B science fund

2. Offer any credentialed US scientist funding for lab startup and replacement of NIH grants if they move to Canada

3. Immediate permanent residency

4. Citizenship after 2 years

Overnight a science superpower

It’s quite the opposite. He is not being radicalised with the “for you feed” but he is radicalising and brainwashing millions. Social media has been devastating for Western democracies. And we are in in the first inning only.

The sooner the better. But it should also involve technology independence.
Macron urges a new European military coalition as an alternative to NATO to help combat Russia and other threats. "We can't rely on (the US) or rest of the world."

The plan is to create a European army with France, UK, Italy, Poland, Baltic states and everyone who seeks to join.
