I was today years old when I learned that in German there’s an expression "08/15" (null-acht-fünfzehn) meaning "ordinary, mediocre, nothing special"

And it comes from the name of a standard German #WWI machine gun. Alright, makes sense

Hogging the blanckets of #RussianRevolution

Milyukov pulls toward “strengthening power” with whip and bayonet, Kerensky toward “strengthening freedom and revolution” outside, Lenin toward “deepening the revolution” everywhere. And the sweet German just offers his hand and heart.

Dear Imperial War Musesum,
Where did you find this conspiracy?
"The Tsar was forced to abdicate by his own generals."
This is not serious for such a great museum.

A wonderful section by @profaks.bsky.social, Jennifer Keating and Sarah Badcock on internal migration and belonging in the late Russian Empire: peasants going to Gatchina, nomadic peoples moving around Central Asia and the beggers whose work was constantly on the move.
