Sadly the survey history of higher ed category is sorely lacking a non-ivy focused survey text which is up to date. Even Rudolph which focuses on Land-Grants is terribly out of date (1960s)

Thelin is an interesting source but it often preferences the experience of a tiny handful of elite academic institutions and ignores the complex web occurring at state and regional institutions public and private.

The tendency amongst educators and students to view each other as threats in need of management instead of people is so sad. What if we tried to break down hierarchical relationships built on dominance and be good to each other? What a world it could be!

Did they ever think about the plain contrast between their twin educations, military and liberal? How did they reconcile the looming weapons on campus silently menacing, reminding them of the, at the time at least, seemingly certain end of the world. 2/2
