ICYMI: After years of hearing complaints that it's hard to get good career advice in marine biology, I assembled an expert panel to answer your questions about graduate school, where to find jobs, what skills are needed, and much, much more.

Our bryozoan paper is out in @genomeresearch.bsky.social! Led by @tomlewin.bsky.social, we report genome shuffling across the phylum and synteny evidence for the Lophophorata hypothesis. Grateful to John Bishop @thembauk.bsky.social and the DToL project for sharing openly!

Interested in working on evo, devo, and/or neurophysio of opsin-expressing cells in Nematostella (and other squishy critters)?

I am looking for a postdoc this fall '25 and graduate students for '26 (apply by Dec. '25). If this is you please contact me even if uncertain, happy to start a convo!

Such a great symposium! Thank you to all the speakers, impressive level of excellent work. Looking forward to a bright future in cnidarian research!

#sicb2025 also a plug for the next #cnidofest in 2026!

Hi all! I will soon be advertising for a postdoc to join my lab at UC Santa Cruz for early 2025. We are interested in understanding the genetic underpinnings of complex trait evolution, development and regeneration. Please share with your networks.

A beautiful, many-eyed Polyorchis sp. I caught this summer at Friday Harbor Labs. All those red dots around the bell are little eyes (also called ocelli)!

Feeding time! Nematostella vectensis (and all cnidarian) tentacles are covered in stinging cells called cnidocytes that harpoon and inject venom into their prey, in this case a drop of juvenile brine shrimp.
