🍂 October! 🍂

I've been working hard recently on my comic about middle school weird girls who teach themselves witchcraft. My $4 patrons just got a big bite of pencils to read from the past month, check it out!

A loosely penciled comic.

Panel 1, an adult frog character holds a basket and has her hand on a light switch. "Sorry, is the light supposed to be off?"

Panel 2, a child frog character in a skirt and witch's hat stands defiant, one eye closed. Her simple cauldron is bubbling with a tall pillar of fog. "For ambiance!"

Ponies in Therapy, Page #5
Starlight Glimmer sits rigidly, sweating. She says "Before we begin, I'd like to clarify that I defer to your expertise, and will be putting aside all biased subjective notions I may have about what's wrong with me."

i think the most elegant solution will probably be to mark comics i enthusiastically recommend to kids, and also mark comics that have enough grisly or sexual content to earn a little "viewer discretion advised". everything else can just be there
kyssimmee.com
i never really set out to make comics for kids, i sorta did it by accident. do i recommend my own comic to kids?? i mean i guess i do???
kyssimmee.com
I'm sure none of this relates to any ongoing culture wars or moral panics driving bad public policy (i put my finger to my ear) a young boy is flying away in a balloon!?
kyssimmee.com
and i think treating either as a nondefault category sort of subtly taxonomizes it in a judgemental way? I don't want to minimize the kid friendly comics I like, nor do I want to otherise the adult comics i like
kyssimmee.com
i think maybe part of the problem is that I'm assuming a default state of "kid friendly" and an opposing nondefault state of "not kid friendly", when i think most art is made without any particular thought to how children relate to it at all

I'm working on a links page for my comic, especially to link other active comics. part of me feels like it makes sense to note which comics aren't appropriate for kids, but every time i try to draw the line on which of my links is / isn't kid friendly it feels silly and arbitrary

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

it's been extremely refreshing for me to have a completely comedy-centric just-for-fun comic to work on recently, it's keeping me grounded to the fact that sometimes there's value in just drawing a funny picture

ok my actual hot take is I get 10x more work done on comics when I shut off the part of my brain that navel gazes about whether my work has value or I'm (fancy voice) respecting the craft
