Good article by Jason Henderson in @heckle.scot on the Lanarkshire Lithuanians. These coal miners and their families fled Tsarist oppression only to face bigotry from Scottish coal owners and trade union leaders alike in the late 19th and early 20th century.
The rise and fall of Lanarkshire’s little Lithuania
Jason Henderson recalls the revolutionary streak among the thousands of Lithuanians who made Bellshill their home in the early 20th century.

The joy on the street yesterday was palpable. May all tyrants be defeated!
Hundreds of Syrians celebrated on the streets of Glasgow yesterday after Syrian opposition groups swept into Damascus and ended Bashar al-Assad’s rule.
Buchanan Street rang out with songs and slogans from the Arab Spring and both Syrian and Palestinian flags were visible.

Funny sort of democracy where the question over whether a foreign government agent gives election-warping sums of money to a fascist in an effort to direct the future of a supposely sovereign nation, from its so-called paper of record, is "will he" rather than "can he".
