I had an alumni who had an issue in the lab. Last minute cancellation of a new hire left her in the lurch. She called for advice, I offered to send James for two months.

I'm incredibly proud of the team for sharing their stories. They were intensely personal and difficult to write, but everyone wanted to participate to tell other scientists "you are not alone"

Stevi moved to the UK from Greece when she was young, struggled at school due to language and the challenge of dealing with a chronic autoimmune condition. She questioned her ability to follow a scientific path, which now has her doing a PhD in Cambridge.

Tombi grew up in rural Zimbabwe and was expected to prioritise learning how to run a house, in preparation for marriage, over her education. She doubted taking her own path, which has led to a successful career in science spanning three continents.

Following a childhood of mental and physical abuse, James lived in foster care for over a decade. He went from rough sleeping on the streets of Seattle, without the confidence to apply for community college, to being a Cambridge Professor.
