on some level I think making a sharp cut, this is strictly public, switch to other channels for more private comms, may be for the best.

both for technical purposes & basic user understanding, but people are people, so...I'm not sure how you get that message through effectively.

i'm a little split on the last example, meetups, because that almost perfectly captures the tension of the design, or better put, public approach to it.

a lot of the public seems to want their social tech to allow for seamless audience switching, full public to group to individual and personal

Skeptical not of the technical reasoning, I follow that, but that despite good intentions something feels naive/off. I think much of it comes down to that I don't think a protocol for socializing makes sense as strictly, or even primarily, public.

Socializing is too fluid for that.

I found all three again!

(I would quote-post the others, but I don't want to add more than this to your overburdened notification-box)

This misunderstands the issue, and is a fundamental error in moderation philosophy. The problem isn't any specific rule violation—Singal is skilled in "I'm-not-touching-you" harassment and will follow rules if you write them. The problem is the overall effect on the site Singal's presence will have.
This is Truth. Capital T.

As such, you don't ban on RULES. You ban on the spirit of them. The philosophy behind them. Rules lawyers, by definition, are trying to break the rules. Ban them.
Back when I was a moderator for a relatively large online community, we had a "rule zero": that no set of rules that you could make for any online space could be exhaustive. So long as you share a space with one other person, there's no way you could capture every possible scenario and edge case

exactly one of the things i've felt was off but couldn't sort out how to describe

it's a good void around here

for sure

Mastodon has developed an insular nerd rep that reflects bad on AP more broadly

similar to Threads developing a rep as a copycat influencer/celebrity/biz space

and Bsky developing rep as new-Twitter with some of the good & bad of that

i follow, it read wild knowing the other side of things was all. Also hadn't caught Evan's stance on AT

i think a major part of the hate from AP-side is the all-too-common tech pedantry there regarding AT's insistence on calling itself decentralized (which being real, both are distrib > decentral)

the funniest move Threads could make right now, given their recent pattern of ripping off Bsky, would be to drop ActivityPub for ATProto

frankly ATProto may even be a better fit architecturally, but Threads being a Meta/Facebook product immediately makes it a No-Go Zone

"readily accepted a megacorp"???

before bsky opened up they made this, and so far as i'm aware many instances continue to be actively against Meta/FB/Threads/etc.

a mix of funny and sad is that a part of the fediverse has unironically(?) tried to use this for their link aggregators/forums (e.g. Lemmy/Mbin/etc.)
