my daughter brings me her spouse's old new yorker magazines, which i cut up for collage. my six year old housemate requested magazine birds. so here's a paper crane folded from a photo of moneys behind a chain-link fence, sitting beside a bunch of magazine illustration squares: a pensive bearded man on a lavender background, a red plaid coat, green lon chaney frankenstein's monster head with embellishments, a little lady in puffy dress standing before a very tall black door. three more cranes, small, medium, large, in a row: multicolored. pretty colors too. housemate played with them for a long time, making them have quite animated conversations. one species, wildly different personalities

don't we all long for a silver footed muffineer and two blue china birds to look at it?

after careful review of the muffineer literature, i conclude that "star-footed muffineer" was a typo. affordable everyday muffineers had lids pierced in a star shape. they were all "footed," or they'd fall over.
on a white linen tablecloth, a shiny silver shaker type thing. it's got a thimble-shaped top with florette piercings and a wee flowerlike crown. it stands on three curved legs that start as lion's heads and end in tiny paws. two sky-blue little china birds nestle beside it, looking up at it (it stands four times their height), one with head cocked quizzically. they're whispering, that?? that's a muffineer??

small desk on my bed holds a paper towel with a naked apple, green peel spiraled off in one piece, old fashioned steel peeler set aside; a pint glass pitcher of pale yellow lemon water with a carven apple floating in it; a finished apple head with a big nose & empty eyes, perched on a paper towel, ready to hang by its stem to dry. sure-'nough Barlow jack-knife, open & waiting.

adorable oak tree slippers for a 94 yr old. they fit *perfectly*
4-montage of pine-green slippers. they are crocheted from cheap acrylic yarn that is very soft to the touch - important for thinning aging skin. i agonized over the size bc he is a tall man with cankles. tried 3 different patterns, my tall son trying them on over thick socks. but ultimately they fit like a, well, like a glove. embellished with 2 oak leaves appliqued to the tops (crocheted from the same green), and each has a 3-d acorn (crocheted with tan shell & dark brown cap & stem, stuffed with yarn) dangling between the leaves, hanging from a braided stem, easily untied if annoying. he showed me the slippers i made him 2 years ago, same basic pattern, thank goodness. he wore holes right through, under ball and heel. and here i thought nobody ever wore the slippers i made that year, 5 pairs in all! personally i like slippers, and get a kick out of these retro-looking nana ones.

2 crocheted oak leaves of dark green, 1 acorn of dark green with dark brown cap. acorn is a bit large but I can't make it any smaller! these are mere prototypes of embellishments for some slippers for a certain 93 yr old we know...

frog life
on my bed (where all the magic happens), green yarn coming out of a half-skein, going to a small round (technically, 3 rounds) of double crochet on a blue hook. in between, it's just a big big mess of unwound yarn. not really tangled (thank goodness), just a mess. i'm working on a pattern, & experimentally crocheted a ways on it before deciding to backtrack: thus i unraveled, back to almost the beginning. we call such unraveling "frogging," because you rip it, rip it, rip it, rip it...

2 photos of the same, hmm, personality, one from front & other from side. lil teadragon stuffie, made from "royal gold" colored bamboo socks, very soft. it's an "alpine chamomile*" teadragon, so it also has a white furry coat & felt antlers. bouquet of chamomile on crown of head (felt leaves & flowers with thickly french-knotted centers). stuffed with springy wool. for a six year old. *prompting me to sing "edelweiss, edelweiss" all over the place see prev photo text, eh

battle of the teadragons. who will win?
3-montage of a game of "sequence for kids" played on my bed (where All Things are played, made, or slayed). 1: a golden teadeagon perches on a heap of furry white fabric, soon to be their alpine winter coat. they peruse their cards, beside a heap of red game-chips. 2: across the board, a smaller amber-colored teadragon with a crown of chamomile flowers peruses their own cards. 3: the aforementioned board. pretty tight. the dragons have blocked each other's moves so consistently, it's hard to tell who has advantage. Little Chamomile is playing a yellow chip next to a free space. smart! photo does not show, but we are listening to various versions of Edelweiss, as i prepare to make Big Chamomile into Alpine Chamomile which I've determined to be another name for Edelweiss. yeah i know, same fam, different gens. but i predict flowers will look much the same when all is sewn and done. and a six-year-old learned a new song, so that's cool.

i made a cuttlefish.
it can't be seen thru cellphone & lamplight, but this nubbly soft yarn is saturated indigo-royal-blue-deep-purple.
the ruffles (fins) are fine blue fingering wool with an edge of fuzzy powder-blue mohair.
stuffed with springy wool, mouth inside is a bit of purple velour.
description in body of text. i will say though that i have watched a lot of videos of cuttlefish now & i think they are super extra cool.

i gotta tell you. i f'n love these things. so elegant.

for years i used loops of thread or stripped wire twisties to thread difficult needles. they were okay but the wide thumb-grip of this ultra cheap little guy makes life infinitesimally easier.

imagining ancient versions, bone & whisker...
a needle threader lying on a cardboard box. it's a small red plastic disc with a fine golden wire sticking out one side of it. the wire is bent in a fishy diamond shape, so that when you poke the nose through the needle's eye, it collapses, then springs open again once fully inserted. (you stick the thread through the diamond & pull, drawing the thread through the needle's eye.)

also made my tardigrade today. so cute! 🧶
tardigrade made from a pair of stretch gloves. beige in daylight just like the microscope photos & films, but looks golden here because of nighttime lamplight. it's plumpish, yet a bit floppy: loosely filled with lavender-scented lentils. eight stumpy legs (shortened glove-fingers). tiny felt claws. its little nose is a 5mm flat spacer bead, vaguely flower-like. from nose to tail it's just shy of 10 cm. in real life it would be about 1/2 mm, but you could watch it under your everyday low-power home microscope ❤️

made a lobster.
housemate celebrating 3rd birthday tomorrow. he loves lobsters because of watching everybody in this place play eldenring. 🧶
green lobster artsy looking doll. green felt upper, sequin eyes. tummy is green velour bc he loves soft things. body is filled with lentils, lightly lavender-scented. all kind of weird stuffing really, just like a real crustacean. about 8" long from tip of claw to flip of tail.

there are about 1200 different species of tardigrade, & they live everywhere. here is my favorite one: Tardigrade Out Of Carolina.

microscope pic of translucent tardigrade seen, i guess, from below. plump lozenge-like body, with 8 plump little limbs all akimbo, each terminating in six tiny paddle-shaped fingers. got some little eyebrow whiskers sticking out in front. really looks like a stop-action shot, a snapshot of a lively energetic moment, forever frozen in time. overall beige with some amber blobs where i suppose the "large, irregularly lobate" stomach lies. so stinkin' cute!

once upon a time there was a badass named saint clare.
painting of st clare of assisi. she is wearing voluminous grey robes with black stripes & a black headcovering. she stands on a high stone walkway; we stand on the same level & can see the mountainous landscape drop away behind her. she's barefoot. she holds a long stemmed white lily in the crook of one arm, and raises a monstrance - a golden vessel holding a communion wafer behind glass - with her other hand. this commemorates the time an invading army came to her abbey & she drove them away by standing on the parapet brandishing the monstrance at them. her nuns had to come & get her from her sickbed - she had some kind of awful debilitating chronic illness & was a wreck, but they were all desperate. in the painting she glances toward us, hunching slightly with the weight of the vessel outstretched. she looks unwell: a bit haggard, a little puffy, flushed, kind of hollow-eyed. somehow though the initial impression is that she is valiant, certainly unafraid. st clare was real & you can still see, in a museum, the letter she wrote to the pope of her day, demanding that he prohibit the giving of donations or patronage to her order of nuns, now known as "the poor clares." she would not allow any interference with their solidarity with people living in poverty. i do think they probably wear shoes now though

lil guy made from a blue stretch glove. he has black embroidery-floss hair in a godbun tied up with red thread; rather elaborate bindi & earrings of copper metallic thread. he's wearing a paisley challis dhoti and a sash thing. stuffed with springy lambswool. you can easily see why everybody loves him. unfortunately, my glove-doll novice skills yielded arms too stubby to get his flute to his face. i elected to give him opposable thumbs which foreshortened them... but golly it only took *one* glove; I'm reluctant to hack into its mate just to make better arms. i like having another full glove to make, like, a Blue Meanie or something. but then i think, is it fair to block him from playing his flute? he loves it so much -- seldom seen without it. hmmm.

here's the first magic bindle i made, to work for my heart health. it has secret pouches containing a st. peregrine/ mater dolorosa chaplet & a small litany. it lives under my bedpillow. deets in alt text.
