Shelters that house unaccompanied minors are bracing for "Freaky Friday," the start of an ICE operation that will first issue letters to children, seeking to pressure them to return to the countries they've fled in exchange for a cash payment. If they decline, their parents will be targeted by ICE.

Satellites have been tracking the water held in glaciers, lakes and the world’s vast underground reserves — aquifers. A extensive analysis of that data reveals water is rapidly disappearing beneath much of humanity’s feet, and large swaths of the Earth are drying out. www.latimes.com/environment/...
Humanity is rapidly depleting water and much of the world is getting drier
Research shows vast portions of the world are losing fresh water and getting drier. Groundwater depletion accounts for two-thirds of the continents' water losses, contributing to rising oceans.

The transformation of the prison into migrant detention continues a pattern of ICE moving into shuttered prisons. With several recently closed prisons in the state and one more expected next year, activists worry whether one of those facilities may be next.

California City mayor told me that he had proposed to the company that they turn the former prison into a training academy for trade careers but CoreCivic decided to wait until after the election to see which way the political winds would blow.

They’ve dropped their paywall, but their ongoing coverage is a good reminder of why local newsrooms need support — and what we lose when those outlets are hollowed out.

This is a jarring story about Tegna owned WUSA-TV pulling a story AFTER IT AIRED. The excuse is that the story needed a comment from the local gas company BUT that seems a bit fishy especially because 1) the local gas co isn't mentioned 2) the general industry complaints are included. HMMMM
