i wondered abt the clothes on newer seasons of survivor on taran's patreon stream a while back, finally decided to look it up today. this is illuminating

It's a weird and sometimes complicated process.
Production tells them to send in pictures of possible outfits and items, and they usually lean towards color schemes of the teams they'll be on. They approve them or tell them to send in other options. No major logos. And a lot of the producer suggestions will lean towards dressing as their archetype (like if someone's a lawyer, they might be told "hey do you have any blazers?") though I feel like in the new era this doesn't happen as much. They also approve their jury outfits that are stored at Ponderosa (where they live at after getting voted out) to wait for them should the player get on the Jury. Though they pick a bunch of possible items, they tell the player what to wear on marooning day.
Lauren from IOI's floral dress was initially one of her submitted jury outfits, then on the first day they said "Ok put on the floral dress." and that's what she was stuck with for the season. She goes into this a lot in her tiktoks and talked about how a lot of other things were bought from amazon because you can get simple plain staples for cheap and in a lot of colors.
You can tell that earlier seasons they let them wear more practical items (sunglasses, hats, cargo pants, etc) and then eventually went to a "everyday clothing" theme, the best examples being the surprise maroonings of Pearl Islands and China where they were dressed for press day but instead started the game. And then there are cases of people's entire outfits being picked for them by production. The infamous minidress given to Purple Kelly, because she was the model/beauty queen archetype, caused her to her borrow Fabio's coat all the time because she literally didn't have enough to wear to stay warm. And then Cochran never wore sweater vests in his life but production gave him them because it fit his nerd archetype. our first real fall since we were kids 😭 texas has been hot as hell for far too late in the season for years now, this is such a beautiful shock to the system. filled w gratitude that we were able to move states away despite the stress of doing it with 4 pets. we're fortunate finally be here

we're moving out of texas in the spring (bittersweet) and we're trying to start packing early. i'm reeeeally not looking forward to packing our house full of books. like... holy shit. we have a lot of physical books for ppl who keep most of theirs on e-readers
