Very happy to have been awarded an APEX grant for a project on “Interpretable acoustic-articulatory relations in speech production” w/ co-investigators Anton Ragni & Aneta Stefanovska. The plan is to do some interesting speech research at the intersection of linguistics, physics & computer science!

Day one of the Factor forensic linguistics summer school done and I’m really enjoying it so far.

I did my MA at @lancslinguistics.bsky.social before they did much in this area. I enjoyed sociophonetics so seeing some of the more applied aspects with forensic speech science was a great start!
A slide on voice identification discussing that voices have been used to identify individuals for a long time through various sources like phone calls, taxi calls, cctv or surveillance footage A bookmark advertising the MSc Forensic Linguistics and Speech Science, on top of my factor notebook and new pens. If I could do another Masters I’d consider this one!! A slide titled ‘the voice is not a constant’ with images to show how voice may change for context or audience, it featured two short clips of Gillian Anderson using her American and English accents depending on her audience. A Lancaster University tote back featuring a line image of a duck. On my way back to the car I walked past many ducks and several ducklings.

Once a year we take our @lancslinguistics.bsky.social MA students for a trip to the Lakes that involves a little hiking, a little climbing, a little caving and a little ice cream. Once again we were incredibly lucky with the weather and everyone had a great day out and a day off from dissertations.
