It's odd to criticize one's defence industrial base as being too successful in 2025, so I am not entirely convinced he will really put it all at risk. Even Fico has honoured contracts with Ukraine, IIRC, for a similar reason. But it's also 2025, so we will see.

Should the UK and Japan have a new formal defence alliance?

On this question, I agree with @wdjames.bsky.social that "rather than engaging in lengthy treaty negotiations, Britain and Japan should focus on tangible outcomes, such as delivering GCAP on time." www.britainsworld.org.uk/p/the-big-as...

A good essay by William Freer on the need for cost-effective Counter-Uncrewed Aerial System (C-UAS) defences to be scaled up in Europe and how NATO's Joint Support and Enabling Command could oversee the design and formation of a C-UAS brigade.

Hegseth's speech was disgraceful and vulgar. That's all I will ever say about it. However, I do want to note the rich irony to come if this talk of 'warrior ethos' and 'punishing violence' precedes a Global Posture Review that envisions a major strategic retreat from Europe and the Indo-Pacific.

Hegseth: "We unleash overwhelming and punishing violence on the enemy. We also don't fight with stupid rules of engagement. We untie the hands of our warfighters to intimidate, demoralize, hunt, and kill the enemies of our country. No more politically correct and overbearing rules of engagement."

Most interesting part of the speech—a familiar MAGA tirade—was the audience reaction. Didn’t hear a single person applaud. Generals and admirals sat silently during this political lecture from a former National Guard captain. The right reaction.

How do small-state allies like Latvia see Germany?

"Contrary to the views expressed by political elites in the region, our representative survey attests that at the societal level, Germany is valued and appreciated as a security actor." link.springer.com/article/10.1...
How Small-State Allies Perceive Germany - Politische Vierteljahresschrift
Russia’s full-scale attack against Ukraine in February 2022 shattered many longstanding pillars of the European security architecture. One of the most profound changes relates to Germany’s approach to Russia and its role in securing NATO’s eastern flank. In light of Moscow’s aggression, Berlin pledged to strengthen its military footprint in the Baltic Sea region. In this process, has Germany met the expectations of its Baltic allies? In this paper, we seek to probe the views of Germany that go beyond the policy elite’s level. Based on an original face-to-face omnibus survey in Latvia that included 1002 respondents, we assessed the public opinion of Germany. Contrary to the views expressed by political elites in the region, our representative survey attests that at the societal level, Germany is valued and appreciated as a security actor. Latvians, based on our survey, are rather favorable toward future German leadership as a security actor and express trust in its military support. Our findings reveal certain divisions between the political elites and the wider society that ask for explanations beyond the different compositions in terms of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics.
