Elisabeth Fischer, age 11, died in 1777. In a #graveyard with so many angels, hers has shoulders in the shape of a heart. #tombstone #angel #cemetery

Pennsylvania German angels are usually softer, more childlike. This feels as if the carver knew Elisabeth Ruth whose 1771 stone note 18 years of marriage, 7 children and dead at age 37. #tombstone #graveyard #cemetery #graveart

Mason Jacob Hirneisen is known for a rope like trim on his stones but also some anthropomorphic elements that are a little creepy by today’s standards. Oh, and I don’t know that we would pay for a tombstone with errors these days, corrected or not.

While not remarkable in design, a moment to remember 1st gen American b 1735 who went on the have: 16 children, 138 grandchildren 91 great grandchildren (per her epitaph), outlive her husband by 29 yrs and die at 81 in 1816. Her stone survived urban development and move of locale now in concrete 😣

Examples of a carver several of us in SE Pennsylvania are calling the “raised dot” or “6 dot” carver. Active late 1770s to early 1800s in 3 counties.
