My father, Ernest John Naples, has just begun his journey into blessed memory. He has offered me so much wisdom and guidance life, and I'd like to share some of that with you in this 🧵. If you would, please light a candle and say a prayer that his final journey is swift and peaceful. /|\

What's wrong with this picture?

A giant, deep-dish pizza pan serving as our new bird bath because the critters flipped and broke the old (pale yellow) pottery bird bath. Birds do not seem to recognize this as a bird-bath, and the other critters are not drinking at it, either.

Any ideas why?

Another seasonal gift from my young photographer, Steven White...

Rain chains flowing. Gotta love November in the Coast Range Mountains of California!

Love it when useful research falls into my inbox, right when most needed. And also love the faculty culture of sharing rather than gatekeeping knowledge. (Thanks, @jasonmnagata.bsky.social)
📣 New @ucsfchildrens.bsky.social study in @jama.com!

Underage social media use linked to lower reading and memory scores - even low levels of social media exposure were linked to poorer cognitive performance

Love this infographic. Spot on!
Did you know that if you buy my book on Amazon, Jeff Bezos makes 5 times as much as I do on each copy sold? Sharing some behind-the-scenes book math on why buying directly from presses is best for EVERYONE (except Bezos) in my newsletter today! aubreyhirsch.substack.com/p/book-math

My favorite part of November: pruning the neighbor's thorny pyracantha bushes & harvesting the berries for firethorn jelly!

Important resource, both for the ideas presented, and for the citations! The impact of AI on education.

Meditating on a triad of habits of critical importance in this crazy world of tech-bros & bots & AI:

Act like a genuine human being.
Reach out to other genuine human beings.
Treat them with humanity.

Yes! This is the way: have the competent people, who actually know what they're doing, set up parallel systems that render our mismanaged gov't irrelevant. Love this.

Love hearing about projects like this! Re-watering the world.
This pond is now full and the lower ones are starting to fill up. We are getting about an inch of rain today and more tomorrow. I'm excited to see the whole wetland system filled with water! 🌱 🌎

Sad, difficult choice today:

Termites discovered. Choice: let the house be eaten, or do foundation treatments that will eradicate termites but poison our organic orchard & make the fruit unsafe to eat.

Can one successfully transplant 4 y.o. fruit trees?

😧

Benefit of homeschooling: learning to LOVE history as an adult.
😍
Free to read great, college-level texts, like "Worlds Together; Worlds Apart" & "The American Yawp" (in lieu of standard HS fare), study the hows & whys of history, pondering big questions, diverse perspectives, and REALLY THINKING.

When tired and stressed with grown-up worries, picking up an old hardcover edition of "The World of Christopher Robin,” and reading a few poems is like medicine; it makes everything seem alright again.

#Writers BEWARE: I have just been followed by a group of "new #authors" probing me about my projects — all using the exact same words:

"Hello! Are you also a new author? I really enjoy connecting with fellow writers and hearing about their projects."

The AI bots are attempting to groom us. (BLOCK)

Recalling what a deeply human process it is to create a truly useful book index — not replicable by any automated or AI system, as it requires a theory of mind, a deep understanding of the audience & their likely needs, preferred search-terms, and points of confusion.

It is so easy for those of us accustomed to the privilege of clean air to forget to offer up our gratitude. I have been negligent. Today, for the first time in 2025, the SOx and NOx in the SF Bay Area is so bad, my eyes are burning. Praying now for the return of our blessed sea breeze! 🙏🙏🙏

Well, it seems that the US Gov't propaganda team has arrived. You all know what to do.

The more time I spend editing, double-checking index entries, citation reference numbers, and end-notes, the smaller and smaller those little numbers get.

Need a bar loupe.

Fun to see how fast struggling students can turn into eager young scholars, when explicitly taught the skills of elaborative interrogation and self-explanation. Ahhh! Good teaching day, today.

The rain-washed foothills send up their gratitude in waves of pungent perfume: coyote mint, redwood, and sage. I love the smell of the air after the first, fire season ending rain!

0.85" of rain, hooray!
And temps in the 40's.
Rain Season has arrived.
Time to break out the cuddly winter blankets.

Fastidious Black Phoebe, bathing and preening, flipping and diving in the bird bath. Getting every feather perfect, like a self-conscious teen before a first date.

Toilette complete, it strut its stuff atop a trellis...

when a birch branch caught in a gust of wind sent it tumbling, tail over beak.
