Amid spilled scarlet and broken feathers was a husk drained of light and blood—all signs of life eviscerated so wholly, not even flies could lay eggs inside the pits of sunken eyes. A fragile thing which turned to ash within their hands, dissolved into glittering waters to drift out with the feathers and blooms of red.

“Are you a child?” she asked and I failed to hold back my bubbling laugh. “Oh, you think this is funny, do you? Get up—” Vanya shooed me with her hands and I stood, fingers digging into the nearby bookshelf to pull my weight. Marrok sat back in his chair with one foot planted against the lip of the counter, red eyes flicking from me to the headmistress. “I want them out of my library.” “No,” she held a finger up to him. “You said you would tutor them.” “I said I would tutor a struggling student. I didn’t say I would tutor this struggling student.” Marrok’s eyes flicked back over to me. “How does that happen, anyway?” He tilted his head. “How does what happen?” “The spawn of Bathory failing every class.” He waved to the headmistress’ letter. “It must be quite hard for you to require the help of a dog such as myself.”. I shoved away from the bookshelf with my arms crossed. “I’m leaving.” “Sit. Down,” the headmistress ordered. With my hands held up in surrender, I fell into the nearest chair, eyes narrowed at Marrok: the current source of my every ire. “I am so tired of this petty infighting between your two families.” Vanya pinched the bridge of her nose. “Everyone else in the supernatural world can get along fine but you two shitheads insist on acting like ill-behaved cats and dogs—What is it, young Bathory?” She turned and glared at my snickering laughter, tapping the toe of her shoe. “It is just a great comfort to know that your Arrogance”—I waved a hand towards Marrok—“is but a simple shithead like me at times.” “Did you just turn that into a title?” he asked. “If the shoe fits.” I shrugged. “You are trying my patience.” Headmistress Vanya rubbed at her temples. Marrok snorted as he tidied up his workspace. “Imagine how I feel.” “I was talking about the both of you.” He sighed, papers slapping onto his desk while his chair creaked as he leaned back in it. “Fine. I will tutor them, but I want an apology—and I want you to have this chair oiled before I lose my mind.” I leaned back in my own chair, arms crossed. “Who said I wanted you to tutor me?” “Lucian,” Headmistress Vanya wielded my name like a one-word rebuttal. “You will find no finer tutor, believe me. That, and he is the least likely one to mention that you’re failing to anyone.” He looked at me expectantly. They both looked at me. Waiting, expectantly. “Fine.” I sighed. “And what, pray tell, should I apologize for?” “For calling me a dog, and for trying to eat someone in my library last week.” The headmistress turned her attention on me while Marrok’s lips twitched with a smile. I was going to kill him. A slow, painful death, for a quick one would be far too kind. “Is that what this is about?” she asked. “What did I say about doing that on campus?” “It was entirely consensual.” I waved a hand about. “But let’s not pretend you gave a damn about my date, Marrok—you were more concerned about blood getting on your books.” “Of course I was—every time your ilk comes into my library things get damaged or go missing. And let’s not pretend you gave a damn about your date. Do you even remember his name?” “It was… er…” I scratched my head. “Edgar, or something.” “His name was Cedric. I learned as much when you left me to take him to the infirmary for anemia.” “Oh, he was fine. At least I bite people for nourishment. What do you do it for? Sport?” “Enough—” The headmistress clapped her hands before her. “You are to meet every Tuesday."

With the way Marrok growled the last part, I knew he’d directed it at me. Turning to look him in the eyes, I unclasped my hands and placed a finger on a particularly old-looking book and dragged it down the spine, relishing in the way he twitched while trying to focus on the headmistress’s letter. “I am going to kill them before this is done.” His eyes returned to me while dropping the letter to flit down upon the desk. “I hope you know that.” At whatever the headmistress said, his lips curled. Though, it might also be from how I trailed the tips of my fingers over the row of books as I walked. For the first time, the library smelled less stagnant, not of old things left to dust but of leather, of something dear and loved. “I, quite frankly, don't care who they are,” Marrok growled. “If they keep touching my stuff, I will tear their head from their body.” My lips twitched until he called my name, phone held out for me to take. “The headmistress would like a word with you,” he said. Crossing back to the desk with a sigh, I leaned over to take the handset, looking Marrok in his blood-red eyes, I purred, “Hello, Headmistress,” into the phone. “Hello, Lucian,” she greeted. “For both of our sakes, do you think you could listen to Marrok when he asks you not to touch his things? He’s quite particular.” “If the librarian has a problem with students handling the books in the library,” I circled my fingertip over the cover of one said books on the counter, “then he should maybe consider a new occupation.” “I don’t have an issue with students touching the books.” Marrok slid it out of my reach, leaning forth in his chair until we sat face-to-face. “I have an issue with you touching them.” Lucian, please,” Headmistress said. “You need him to pass your classes.” Completely ignoring how he was almost close enough to kiss, I flopped my chin into my hand and sighed. “You couldn’t have picked a different tutor? I’m sure there has to be several better than a dog.” I stood upright as I said it. Blood churned inside his eyes, the hair on his arms thickening into black fur. It spread across his skin, reaching to where it hadn’t touched before. Hands turned black with nails lengthening into claws. Marrok was gone, counter door slamming open then shut before I could garner the headmistress’ response—her voice but an unintelligible buzz warbling out of the dropped receiver and I gagged against his hand. Claws pierced into my neck as the lycan held me at eye level, legs dangling off the floor with my own claws scraping blood from his arm. Everyone had always told me that werewolf blood tasted like drinking wet dog, that even a wet dog would taste better, but how could that be true when his blood smelled spiced like mulled wine on a cold winter’s night? “Apologize, or I’ll feed you to a dog,” he said. My laugh sputtered in my throat, blood rushing like an ocean in my ears as my face grew warm. It was the swiftest reminder of how I differed from my vampiric kin— you couldn’t suffocate that which was already dead. And while my family had long spent their days reminding me of my own mortality, it had never been so blatantly thrust in my face before. It never made me feel so alive and hungry before. A smile crept across my lips as my mind slipped somewhere into bliss. “Marrok”—the headmistress’ voice—“you can’t assault a student.” I hit the floor in a heap of bashed limbs and elbows, sucking air into my starved lungs with fervent gasps. “They started it.” His boots receding in a series of ever-quieting clicks. The counter door opened and shut once more.

“I’ll have you know I’m a dhampir,” I said, if only so I didn’t stare. “Same difference,” he waved a hand. “Only you’d taste better, should you piss me off.” “I do believe that’d make a mess of your precious library.” “They’re my rules.” He grinned something slightly feral. “I can make an exception.” “How predictable.” I narrowed my eyes. He pushed off the doorframe and stepped behind the counter. “Whatever you’re here for, you’ll have to make it quick.” He tidied up stacks of papers. “I’m closing up early for the evening.” It was then that I became aware of how the only beings present were he and I. “Oh.” I blinked and unfolded the paper in my hands, and Marrok looked up at me with only his eyes. “Is that a problem? It’s not like you frequent—” An inward groan accompanied his chair creaking as he sat down in it. “You’re Lucian.” A pointed fingernail tapped against the wooden armrest. “And you must be my tutor, Marrok.” What luck. He glared at me and huffed, then leaned forth and picked up the handset of an ornate, brass phone. Spinning the dial a few times, he placed the receiver to his ear, tapping his nail onto the wooden countertop now. “Hello,Vanya,” he crooned the headmistress’ name into the phone. “You have some explaining to do.” I rolled my eyes and tossed the unfolded recommendation letter onto the counter before turning to wander, hands clasped behind my back. “Yes, I’ve met them—don’t touch anything.”

A reference sheet of my two OCs, Lucian and Marrok. Lucian is a fallen angel with tanned skin and long, white hair who looks mischievous; the tips of their fingers and pointed ears fade black; and they dress in black with an ornate, creamy shawl. Marrok is a god with black hair just passed his shoulders. He has pale skin and red eyes and looks chronically tired; he wears dark colours, a shirt left unbuttoned, and a red robe worn loose and flowy.
