(my only exposure to Amtrak was in Boston, which at the time didn’t feel too alien compared to what I was used to)

The “narrow platform” bit makes some sense (and is hard to retrofit). One escalator per platform is fairly anemic too, but also difficult to change.

But… “gambling on which track”? Is that not something that’s set months in advance, barring track works and the like? Curiouser and curiouser…

I’m thoroughly flabbergasted at this.

This is not a dig at Amtrak, or disbelief of your description. I simply cannot understand the problem. Here in NL having the hall at a different level than the tracks is the norm, and I’ve never seen anything like you describe. Are the trains so much bigger?

IME Multi-microcontroller setups tend to get hairy if you need even a semblance of a shared timebase

If you look at something more modern than a tiny85 (like the newer ATTiny814, or an XMega), you’ll find parts with input capture and hardware events that can measure pulse rates/intervals with minimal to no software overhead. Bigger parts like the XMega can easily do this on multiple inputs

Would love to, thanks!

Pathé Amsterdam used to (still have?) the Oscar weekend, where one could buy a day pass to watch as many Oscar candidates as you wanted.I found four to be my limit;may need to try your strategy of spreading it out over multiple cinemas.

I’ve had to sift through product manuals to figure out whether a Smart Appliance will *only* work with app/internet connection enabled, or if it’s an added (mis)feature. Not ran into one yet that could figure out how to get onto the WiFi without my help (obXKCD: xkcd.com/416/ )

Heat exchangers have been a thing for HVAC systems for quite some time now, to the point that they are economical to use in apartments/houses

Nope. Life is too short, and the line between doomscrolling and ragescrolling is fine enough as it is

(pity BlueSky still doesn’t have polls; your post would have been a good fit)

For all non-USAnians: it would appear that there’s discounted international shipping for orders over 150US$. I only found out way deep in the checkout pages, after almost getting charged 117$ shipping on a 118$ order. Wasn’t hard to find a few more mugs to pass the threshold.

I take it you’re aware of Jilles and his stickers/logos? I’ve lost track of him since leaving Twitter, but much of his material appears to be here: github.com/jillesdotcom...

Same. Easier to do as a man (-> clothes with pockets), but my wallet, keys, passport and phone are always in the same pockets. As a bonus I’ve only managed to lock myself out of my house while distracted once.

Some personal items I will mourn if I have to leave my bag behind, but so be it

If you’re not yet familiar with his work, do look up what the late Jim Williams (of Linear Technology) has written about fixing these kind of measurement instruments (there’s some old YouTube videos, too: youtu.be/I6ODi7qSpYg?... )

Verklaren is niet hetzelfde als goedpraten, maar hier is een vrij diepe draad over het waarom (vanuit het perspectief van een bedrijf dat (ook) in de VS opereert):

OK, gather 'round, kiddies - let's do a "why are lawyers like this" thread.

Specifically, let's do a "why does the simplest software come with mandatory IP licenses that assert claims to all the rights you have in the universe, up to and possibly not excluding in your firstborn offspring.
Bye forever, WeTransfer.

Along a similar vein: the teeny river crabs living in and around the Amstel. When confronted with a cyclist, they invariably take a “come at me, bro” stance.

My dude, my bike and I outweigh you by a factor 1000, and I need to pay close attention *not* to accidentally splat you.
