One wonders what is even the point of such a short raincoat, as it will not even do the job of keeping you dry.

The classic length also creates a nice, long vertical line. Compare these silhouettes to McGregor's overcoat, where the truncated length makes the coat look boxy.

I often talk about "shape and drape," which is my term for the garment's silhouette and how the fabric moves and hangs. Look at the drama created by these silhouettes on the left. Compare that to today's slim, short, shrunken overwear. No drama; no verve.

About a quarter inch away from the edge of the lapel, you see a line of machine stitching. Nearly all tailored jackets (suit jackets, sport coats, overcoats) are finished in some way like this to prevent the edge from curling to the wrong side.

Check out armhole on this jacket. A high armhole allows for freer, more comfortable movement, so you can do things like embrace someone without disturbing the jacket. Over time, mass-manufacturing has resulted in lower armholes to sell more units. Big armhole = fits more people.

Here we see a man wearing an overcoat with lapped seams and a Martingale belt. A lapped seam creates a stronger, neater, and slightly more water resistant finish, but it requires more time, effort, and skill to create. The half belt allows for adjustability (and it looks cool)

In 1942, at the height of the Second World War, Alfred Eisenstaedt photographed sweethearts bidding each other farewell before the men depart for war, not knowing if they'd ever return. These candid shots give us a glimpse of what average Americans wore.

Let's look at the details. 🧵

Today, you'll find envelope pockets on high-end men's outerwear, such as polo coats. The four rows of stitching (sometimes done as five) is something that's put onto country outerwear to reinforce areas that might get pulled by bramble or brush. Such details require skill and time to make.

Not big on them either. Especially for pets and other animals.

An American Werewolf in London and The Thing. The Thing is still scary, if there’s such a thing as a movie that scares adults 😅
Tell us about a movie that scared the shit out of you as a kid.
