Beautiful square for #StitchAssemblyRGS25 featuring detail of key moments across the #RGS-IBG conference.

'The back with dangling “spiralling” threads signifies the invisible interconnections and on-going (future) weaving of seen and unseen'.

How might stitching help us get to know mosses on more intimate terms?

New coauthored paper from the MossWorlds project on stitching sphagnum moss and doing creative, interdisciplinary work in geography labs: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Embroidered moss made from a selection of textural green fabrics attached to plain cotton fabric stretched across an embroidery hoop. A brown label with the handwritten words 'laboratory incident' is attached to the fabric.

'Thank you very much for bringing this idea to the conference! It was so creative and fun! Sorry I went a bit out of the square shape.'
Stitched quilt square - a central brown square overlaid with fabric and stitches forming an eye shape in the centre, a patterned fabric leaf shape at the top point, and narrow ribbons of fabric in beige, green and blue tones attached to the bottom point.

'My daughter (thirteen years old) and I stitched up a small piece together. Thank you for conducting this project of kindness and creativity.'
Stitched quilt square - rectangles of cotton and linen fabric in shades of pink, yellow and cream overlaid and attached with a running stitch and embroidered star or flower shape in the centre

'My piece traces the geography of my learning journey, and my journeys across the country (...) The blanket stitch which runs along the top of the piece is the 'golden thread' which brings/holds it all together (which I am still seeking within my own research project : )'
Stitched quilt square - overlaid fabrics in warm orange and beige tones, with some frayed edges. A variety of different embroidery stitches, including broken lines that look like river tributaries or road networks. Blanket stiches around the edges of the quilt square

'Homely home/Unhomely home.
Forgetting, remembering, designing, creating. Boring transformation making homes unhomes. Missing and protecting homely homes. Concrete jungle, generic spaces. Turned into dust. Lakes, woods, heaven on Earth. In my mind.'
Stitched quilt square 'Homely Home' - a dark grey background fabric overlaid with an orange circle (top left), a tall yellow triangle (right), a band of frayed blue denim (bottom), attached date palm fibres (left) and stitching in beige threads, giving the effect of a sun in a dark sky over water

More stitched squares shared by remote participants in our #StitchAssemblyRGS25 session at #RGS-IBG conference last month. Big thank you to all who took part & shared their reflections!

Two overlapping stitched squares. The bottom has dark grey and yellow small shapes stitched onto a salmon pink background, and the top features an embroidered raised fist with the text AC2025 RGS Black Teacher. A small yellow flower sits alongside the stitched piece.

A comic style illustration of a large cat jumping out of a cardboard box that reads 'methods' on its side, towards a person sitting in a wheelchair who looks surprised. Text reads 'research can be lively, messy and chaotic!' Papers, pens and pencils are also flying out of the box.

"The destruction of Palestine’s seed banks reveals ecocide as a weapon of temporal control — a strategy for extending genocide beyond the present moment into an undeterminable future."

This summer, Israeli bulldozers rolled through the West Bank city of Hebron with ruthless efficiency, targeting Palestine’s only surviving national seed bank. What happened in Hebron fits the legal definition of ecocide — the deliberate destruction of ecosystems to undermine human survival.
Israel’s Attacks on Seed Banks Destroy Millenia of Palestinian Cultural Heritage
When Israel targets Palestinian seed banks, it’s not just destroying buildings. It’s attacking the future itself.

My RGS highlight was the Stich Assembly workshop. This was my attempt to kick off the Watershed Moments project with @riverdonproject.bsky.social. Can you tell what it is?

My output inspired by what I believe the vision & values of my work in creating a #GoodFoodNation to 'build a long table not a higher wall'

A table with people connecting and eating around it together. A space of equity.

Birmingham campus tower in the sun. No people are around and the green trees and plants look peaceful. Hands reaching for differently dyed and shaped material which are scattered across a white table, holding scissors. Just getting started on my stitched contribution to RGS 2025. Is this another way of connecting #arts and #research, #PhysicalMobility and #DigitalMibility? Thank you for this beautiful initiative! #RGSIBG2025 #StitchAssemblyRGS25 🧵🪡
