Sometimes you can see where there is a natural end point. A point of full stop, end of discussion, nothing else to see, everyone go home now.

“I just don’t know how you go around, asking everyone first. I just don’t see how that would work,” Clegg said.

Naturally, Cleggy goes on.

God bless delimiter-separated values.

Everyone is focusing on the NI gaffe, obviously. But the switch from "we came up with..." to "i'm not here to talk about what the Conservative government did" makes me think she really is the world's first genAI party leader.

I admire how bad it is, it's like an anti-search engine.

Good question. Key reading for me was Yeo (2010) that SP hadn't yet decided what it meant, never mind be operationalized (that's how I read it anyway). Not sure how much the debate moved on, but my readings on it stop around the mid 2010s.

The BBC archive is always posting clips that do this. "Information Superhighway" was a particular favourite.

By the way "Disingenuous Slop Feedback Loop" will be available soon from all good local independent record stores. Pressed on 180g vinyl, of course.

Good point this. It's a disingenuous slop feedback loop.

I thought the tone if how quickly she agreed with the correction to plough on was very much in the style of ChatGPT if told it is spouting nonsense

I thought it was about time I created an account. Hoping to chat about digital preservation (and other things of course). Great to see so many familiar faces already! :-)

One for those that remember the 2010s there.

Oh it's coherent alright. For people who look and sound like you and me, no need for ID; for people that don't, card 'em.

Soon everything will have persistent identifiers!

If your university tries some more gentle persuasion, you can ask them if they have a ROR yet, or if they've integrated Research Activity Identifiers into their systems.

Worrying that nominally information professionals are asking a journal if an article exists, as if we *hide* them! No. If we published, it's there; if we published and isn't there, a reason's stated; and if you still can't find it then you believed the bullshit machine and may the Lord have mercy.

Having to check submissions hallucinated works, and getting the occasional email asking for an article that AI made up has added a whole load of value to the academic publishing game.

More and more of my time is wasted double-checking non-existent references, it's infuriating.

“These companies all advertise these tools as knowing your intent,” Taylor told 404 Media. “Understanding what you meant when you put those terms in. They don’t know. They don’t understand. None of those things are true. There is no technical way these tools can do that.”
