A6: I rearranged it to 4 and 13/3, then turned 13/3 into 4 and 1/3 and ended up at 8 and 1/3. But also 11/3 + 2/3 + 12/3 and go from there. I wonder if Ss would give answers in mixed and imperfect forms (do we still call it an imperfect fraction?). #ElemMathChat

A6 My students woudl say 4 13/3 because they would add the fraction numerators and leave the whole number as it is. Some would think about how many thirds are in a whole and how many in 4 wholes. Some would convert 11/3 to a mixed number and add and simplify. I could think of more.... #ElemMathChat

I love student 3's characterization of "uneven". That is what odd means, after all. And that's more clear in some other languages. For example, French has "pair" for even, and "impair" for odd.

I notice that these appear to be times, and that reading down adds half an hour; reading across adds two hours.

Combining those, I predicted we'd add 2.5 hours on diagonal going down and to the right. Very satisfying to see that work out.
