On offence.
As with the evils of the PC Brigade before it, the foundational idea of the anti-woke crusade is that of a tyranny of offence, one wielded by vulnerable communities, charities and human rights organisations. It is they — the easily offended, and not governments, corporations, or the world’s richest men — who hold the real power in public life, and their chilling effect on all our freedoms must be stopped. It gives such people too much credit to even parse their argument, but it should be said plainly: Wokeness, like political correctness, is little more than a pejorative term to describe standardised decency, and the small, sometimes clumsy, measures taken to achieve mutual respect and esteem in a heterogenous world. To be more aware of, and respectful toward other people’s experiences, and to agitate for a more just society in which everyone shares the same social, political, and rhetorical freedoms as anyone else. To traduce that impulse toward fairness and inclusion as little more than “being offended” demeans us all. It is also the most basic and obvious fact about this entire debate that those who rage against “offence” are the most offended people in human history. The are offended by everything: black actors in Star Wars, female characters in Ghostbusters, black or female Doctors in Doctor Who (and quite possibly black or female doctors, full stop), climate activists, historians who acknowledge that slavery happened, commentators who acknowledge that a genocide is happening, low emission zones, recycling initiatives, rude jokes on Have I Got News For You, mildly liberal pronouncements from Gary Lineker on social media, mixed-raced couples in Christmas ads and trans people literally anywhere.

U.S. policy was to help bring an end to apartheid and establish a nonracial, democratic government. In response to this policy and the Act, USAID/South Africa was responsible for financing projects that apartheid victims viewed as critical in promoting social, political, and economic change through peaceful means. The mission enabled community consultation and ensured that the United States did not impose foreign-defined solutions to local problems. USAID created projects and activities to respond to the priorities of the black community and its leaders, maximized black participation and leadership, and ensured activities had a linkage to the general objectives of U.S. policy. First-year funding for the program was $25 million, which was raised to $50 million the second year. The main project areas were community outreach and leadership development to redress the repression of black-led institutions; educational support and training to address the educational crisis in South Africa; black private enterprise development to combat the inhibiting effects of apartheid–induced discrimination in private enterprise; university grants to help create a new generation of economic and political leaders; human rights; legal assistance; labor union training; and health and nutrition
