And let’s not forget that “news” outlets like Fox, NewsMax and OANN deliberately feed those farmers misinformation daily; they’re as much victims as they are bad business people. Those outlets are *designed* to keep people ignorant. So call them what you will, but they’re not willfully ignorant.

Trump is promising $12 billion to help farmers (an amount less than half the soybean market size in Joe Biden’s last term) but he’s not helping the farmers; he’s helping Republican officeholders suddenly vulnerable because voters are starting to hate Trump - and GOP - governance.

What they didn’t understand is that Trump has no loyalty - none - to people who have helped him. None. Once he won the election, those farmers ceased to be important. And the tariffs came, and the commodities markets crashed. They made a shitty business decision.

Such farmers wanted fewer environmental and business regulations. And being generally conservative, they liked Republicans’ disdain for out-groups (e.g., trans people). They knew about Trump’s live if tariffs, but gambled they’d be protected - as they were in Trump’s 1st term.
