My problem with that is that it feels like Team Joyboy and their lineage were already winning the destiny game before Luffy even ate the fruit. (Currently thinking of the big picture narrative as Joyboy vs. Davy Jones vs. Imu—if that makes sense.)

—who planted seeds early in the story to thwart him. Both gods are born from humanity’s desire to overcome itself and keep life interesting. The heroes are basically a theatre troupe performing acts of hope and justice to figuratively inspire society and to literally inspire us. Hence, the cycle.

I’m as apprehensive as anybody about how One Piece is going to do the god and destiny stuff. I think the secret is to always make sure the good guys are the ones taking the bad guys off-script. I want “the dawn” to feel like a gamble paying off.

It would clarify a few things like why Shanks had the fruit to begin with (bringing it back to the holy land for reasons CP9 couldn’t?), why Shanks went back to Windmill Village (to kill Luffy and respawn the fruit?), and why Shanks didn’t want to take Luffy with him (govt crosshairs?).
