I think what a lot of people miss in discussing “government efficiency” is that efficiency is not a thing on its own. Efficiency is about paring down so that you maximize a desired outcome while minimizing the cost, but the desired outcome is heavily dependent on subjective values.

These need to make a comeback, officially. I’ve said it before, shortly after I joined here, but translucent controllers in a wide variety of colors were one of the best things from the late 90’s/early 00’s and it’s borderline criminal that they went away.
