Oh, I agree with this, even though I haven’t lived in Maine for quite some time
leedaviddalton.bsky.social
IDK, if you ever have to drive to Massachusetts from anywhere in Maine, Boston traffic feels like it starts in Portland, no?

Just read this aloud to my wife. Helps to have 1) read those Douglas Adam’s books and 2) to have seen a lot of subtitled foreign movies (including BICYCLE THIEVES). Good stuff, and thanks for the product test!

Phillies made that final inning tense! As a Cubs fan, I’d like to know what that’s even like

Boy, Byron Allen is going to have to invent some new shows to rehab the reps of so many comics

I wa totally unsurprised to learn that Ken Jennings is (was?) Mormon

It’s entirely possible my grandfather, who moved to Utah and converted to Mormonism, introduced these books to our household. I knew some Mormons growing up. They always seemed well-adjusted to me, and if you’re a theater or choir kid, they’re kind of a blast.

Yes! Apt description. I was also a bookworm although not a troublemaker, but was frequently alone and left to my own devices to occupy myself. These boys were so inventive!

The Great Brain by John D. Fitzgerald was like a Mormon ‘boy’s adventure’ version of Ann of Green Gables. The Brain was a cocky Utah kid who scammed his pals, ingeniously dunked teachers, and found ways to make money. E. L. Doctorow was the series’ editor. Jimmy Osmond starred in the movie version.

Loved this series as a kid. To me it felt more like a less pandering Little House vibe. The kids were easy to identify with. Seemed normal.

Egad, it’s *Gillson* Park. Clearly my memory ain’t what it used to be.
leedaviddalton.bsky.social
I couldn’t remember whether the park extended to the temple. I got some nice pix there one summer but no longer on my camera roll, or I’d share

Nearby Gilman Park is an awfully pretty spot, too

Tonight of all nights I’m going to re-up my benediction for Chicago.

We are everything.

No matter what happens in the coming weeks, we are Chicago. We rose from the ashes. We never quit.&10;&10;We are the lake in the morning, the sun rising over the water, its reflection drawing a line straight to our shores.&10;&10;We are the Haymarket Martyrs, the Pullman strikers, always demanding better than what we've got.&10;&10;We are the words of Sandburg and Algren and Brooks and Wright.&10;&10;We are the 90s Bulls, making the impossible possible.&10;&10;We are the dipped Italian Beef. Messy, sure, but incredible.&10;&10;We are the humidity in the summer, the frostbitten cheeks in the winter.&10;&10;We are smoke-kissed rib tips.&10;&10;We are elotes on the street. We are pierogis in a pot.&10;&10;We are Curtis singing Hush now child.

Kind of incredible that this, PSYCHO, and Bava’s BLACK SUNDAY (MASK OF THE DEMON) came out the same year

Totally gratuitous pre-bedtime kinky lingerie scene seals the deal on it

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

Another Halloween rerun. For a good time, watch Hammer’s Dracula A.D. 1972
India ink drawing of Christopher Lee as Dracula in process of chewing on Caroline Munro in Hammer Studios' "Dracula A.D. 1972". Absolute banger picture if you want your horror to be heavy on early 70s London hipsters.

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

Oh. Hang on. So the guy feds tried to pile drive into the concrete was preceded by the “ramming” incident? In which feds apparently rammed themselves and a civilian vehicle? And disabled their own car driving through a construction area? Do I have that right?

per reddit this is the 'ten car' incident -- weird!
