The tour continues...what a busy & chatty morning we had at West Cumbria Volunteering Fair. Jack's addition of a microscope to examine lichens was a winner. We nearly ran out of leaflets! @reachvolunteering.org.uk @cumbriacvs.bsky.social @leedsleaf.bsky.social @forestryengland.bsky.social

About 1000 wildflowers were planted by the banks of the River Duddon on Sunday. Devils-bit scabious, betony, common knapweed & more. Great work & "well done everyone". @leedsleaf.bsky.social @wildhaweswater.bsky.social @cumbriacvs.bsky.social @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @envleeds.bsky.social

It was an honour to be at the launch of the Ingleborough NNR into the King's Series of NNRs earlier this month - check out the blog below for more on what the #WildIngleborough partnership has achieved since forming in 2021 🌳🦋🐦
A sign in the foreground indicates that Ingleborough National Nature Reserve became part of the King's Series of NNRs in September 2025. The peak of Ingleborough mountain is visible in the background.

Last week I gave a talk for the @linneansociety.bsky.social lunchtime lecture series, all about woodland creation! I tried to keep it interesting for non-specialist audiences so, if you fancy an hour of woodland wondering, you can check out the recording here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwoH...

Newly planted trees face many challenges including drought 🌡️, browsing by wild animals 🦌, competing vegetation 🌿, and vandalism 🚓. We're hoping to initiate a network to share strategies, outcomes, and best practice across our region.

Led by a man literally outstanding in his field, Duddon Valley farmer Paddy Deady showed Millom School students around his hay meadows this week. We had a go at some flower & grass ID, with time for a trip across the stepping stones before the bus back to school. @envleeds.bsky.social

We were ring barking on our volunteer day at the weekend. This will create some fantastic standing dead wood habitat, as well as removing some non-native trees. Great to have some new faces along as well as the regulars. Thanks everyone! @envleeds.bsky.social @leedsleaf.bsky.social

I had an amazing time at #CheltSciFest yesterday. Thank you so much to everyone who came to my talk or lantern-making workshop!

Today I'm working at Gair Wood (the University of Leeds research woodland we planted in 2023). I should also have a little time for social media in between tasks so ask me anything and I'll do my best to respond! #AMA 🌳
